Solution to the Three Most Common Complaints About Kitchen Layout

According to “Popular Mechanics”, three of the most common complaints about kitchen layouts are: not enough storage, too little counter space, and no place for seating. There is a solution to all three complaints – installation of a kitchen island. Thus, addition of a kitchen island should become a consideration for kitchen remodeling and improvement projects. There are three basic types of kitchen island: island, snack bar, and peninsula.

Kitchen island, as the name implies, is an island placed in the center of the kitchen space. Typically, the kitchen island includes a cooktop, a full sink, or a small prep sink to make the kitchen more efficient, assuming that there is adequate walkway clearance all around it and that the height and size of the island are just right.

Snack bar is typically an extension of a countertop over a cabinet edge or a length of countertop mounted to an unused wall. As the name implies, it is simply a small eating area for having a quick bite. Snack bars are especially good for small kitchens that can not accommodate an island or a peninsula. Some snack bars have a hinge option to drop down the countertop when it is not in use.

Peninsula is a solution in-between the kitchen island and snack bar. To put simply, it is usually an extension of the kitchen countertop that includes a cooktop or sink. For example, installation of a peninsula on a corridor kitchen turns the layout into an “L” shape. Peninsula works best in smaller kitchens where there is not enough open space for a kitchen island.

Installation of a kitchen island (e.g., island, snack bar, or peninsula) can dramatically improve the work flow of a kitchen and should be considered as an option for kitchen remodeling projects. However, installation of the kitchen island can be a complex task, especially if cooktop and/or sink is part of the package. The use of reliable professional kitchen remodeling contractors is highly recommended. For the best cost estimate and options for kitchen islands, please consult your local kitchen remodeling contractors.
