The days of plain, colored or patterned Formica as the lone choices for kitchen countertops are no more. There are an array of new types of surfaces available today that it could be hard to decide on the best kitchen countertop for your kitchen.
The sort of surface you select will depend on exactly how your countertops are utilized. If you use your countertops as most people do for food preparation, then you want countertop surfaces that will not chip or pit easily and are scratch-and heat-resistant. (Of course, you will still want to use cutting boards and heat-absorbing holders for hot dishes).
If you plan for your countertops to retain your small appliances and/or cooking utensils holders, you can choose a different type of countertop surface. You will still want to keep in mind that some small appliances such as toasters, fat-reducing grills, and countertop microwave ovens intended to sit on countertops may yet give off heat and may hurt a surface that is not heat-resistant.
Here are a few pointers to consider when choosing your new kitchen countertops:
1. Ask yourself how labor intensive (or easy) the surface will be to keep clean. Separate tiles are beautiful, whether used on the whole countertop surface, or set in a specific pattern at intervals along the countertop. Nonetheless, you will need to scour the grout between the tiles regularly, just as you do your bathroom tiles, in order to keep the countertops in pristine condition.
2. Ceramic, marble, porcelain, and other similar materials produce lovely countertops, however, they are inclined to chip, crack, and break easier than other materials. And, sometimes, it doesn't take that much force, or that hard of a blow to the surface, to cause the damage. Additionally, any breakable dish dropped on those surfaces is very likely to shatter.
3. Smooth countertop surfaces are the easiest to clean and keep sanitary. You don't have to be satisfied with a plain-looking surface, though. A lot of smooth countertop surfaces can add a very pleasing appearance to any kitchen décor.
4. Surfaces with shiny finishes can add beauty to countertops, and are easy to wipe off. You may want to use a unique type of cleaner/polisher to keep them shiny, but if you are prepared to take the extra time several days a week to do so, this type of surface may fit your needs.
5. If you have a food preparation island, and do not use your countertops for food preparation at all, then you can put any type surface you choose on your countertops because you don't be concerned as much about the possibility of damage caused by high temperatures.
6. If you have varying countertop surfaces in your kitchen, then you can choose alternating surface materials. You can then have serviceable working areas, along with areas for ornamentation.
