CONCRETE WALKWAYS AND SIDEWAYS

How to resurface walkways and sideways?

Concrete walkways and sideways will last for many years in good condition but due to dirt and the other reasons the condition of the concrete can worsen after a period of time. If the condition of the concrete worsens, you have to repair or resurface concrete walkways and sideways. Resurfacing with concrete is cheaper than any other materials and the positive side of a concrete is that a concrete slab offers solid foundation to resurface the concrete walkways and sideways.

Use an epoxy filler and sealant, if the concrete has small and manageable cracks. Before applying epoxy filling, the cracks have to draw apart to some extend so that the cleaning of the subsurface area is possible. But for most of the home owners, there is need of a contractor to do this work. Pouring of new concrete above the present concrete is also effective. But this also needs a layer of epoxy for creating a coating between the two layers and the result is that the slab will get a new look and will be long lasting than the previous one. The layer of concrete which will be laid afresh should be formed by adding more sack mix and fiber additive.

You don’t have to use only concrete materials as there are other materials available to resurface the concrete walkways and sidewalks. You can use patio tiles or brick or stone masonry, if the concrete is in decent condition. But you have to ensure the material that has been added should not raise the height of your patio blocking the entrances.

Tips for constructing concrete walkways and sideways

Careful planning during construction of concrete walkways and sideways can avoid mistakes which may prove costly. Before starting the construction of the concrete walkways and sideways, it is better to have a sample drawing on a paper showing the existing or the planned pavement areas.

Concrete walkways and sideways are to be constructed in such a way that it should be firm, leveled, well drain, provides good traction and need only little maintenance. These criteria should be met by all patios, decks, connecting paths and walkways. The slopes for the concrete walkways and sideways should not exceed 5% and the grades across the walkways should not be more than 2%. The concrete walkways and sideways should be flat and should allow the water to drain away.

Locate the vegetable and flower gardens nearest to the house to minimize the length of the concrete walkways and sideways. If you are making concrete walkways and sideways which are permanent, these should meet the local building rules such as width, length etc. The dark color of the concrete walkways and sideways reduces the glare of the sun but concrete absorbs heat and make the garden unusable during certain times of the day.

Plain concrete is not attractive and it produces glare in sunlight but is durable. You can make the concrete walkways and sideways attractive with hundreds of patterns and texture by adding color to the concrete. While constructing concrete walkways and sideways you should be careful about its location. You have to avoid trees near to the walkways as the roots of the trees can damage the patio by displacing the slab. So maintain a safe distance between the walkways and the nearby trees.

Outdoor Lights That Beautify Your Home

By: Michael Clark | 25/11/2009
The term outdoor lights means different things to different people. If you float the term at a builders convention, most will tell you that they hang a light by the front door, one by the back door, and one under the carport if one is built on the home. They will also tell you the reason for the lights on the outside of a home is because they are required by code. The more high-end builders will, of course, have a different answer and will address the different aspects of lighting a property.
