Do you like gardening or designing your own home landscaping projects? There are people who just plant some flowers here and there and there are people who put their imagination to work and enjoy designing and creating their own home landscaping projects. Here are some ideas you can put into practice if you want to design your own landscaping project.
Attract birds
Birds add life and sounds to your garden. Not only are they fun to watch and hear, but you can turn your yard into a small bird sanctuary. You can use a birdfeeder to get them coming, but if you're interested in providing more shelter to birds, or to get a larger variety of feathered friends, you can try planting flowers that attract birds, and a birdbath is extremely comfortable for them. Don't forget to plant a variety of flowers, such as sunflowers, holly and other bird-friendly plants, as well as trees. Have a few shrubs and a variety of height in your plants, so to provide the birds with places to hide.
The art of shaping shrubs
We all have seen shrubs and small trees trimmed into funny or strange shapes. This practice is called "topiary" and is quite popular, and not as difficult as it may look like at first. You can go from shaping your shrub into a cube or a spherical shape to those intricate designs you see on TV. All topiary designs are attractive, and there are simple designs, ideal for beginners and more complicated, surreal designs that may take a lot of training, expertise and time. The most popular plants among topiary experts are holly or cedar trees, when they're still very young. You can ask a professional for further information, such as when to trim, what tools you need and suggestions for designs.
Water features
When designing your home landscaping project you can add a pond, fountain or any other water feature. It may take more time to build, but they add a lot of beauty to your yard. The easiest ones are birdbaths, but you can also try ponds with fish and plants, or you can even try a relaxing fountain that may help cover the traffic noise.
If you are not into high maintenance but are interested in adding some fish into your garden, you can try turning a light-colored ornamental flowerpot with no hole on the bottom. There's a large variety of light glass pots you can choose from. Once you got one, fill the bottom of it with some gravel and nice rocks and put some plants in it. Put some goldfish and you have made your own outdoor ornamental fish tank! They are very attractive and add some color and movement to your yard. Just remember to keep it clean and change the water every now and then. Dismantle it during winter if you live in very cold area.
The main issue with water features is mosquitoes, but if you keep a fountain, a water pump will keep water running and mosquitoes out of sight. Fountains should be dismantled in winter, especially if you are under a very cold climate.
The above tips are just some suggestions you can use to trigger your imagination next time you start your own home landscaping project.
