Options for Landscaping your Driveway

The driveway is part of a house which is often over-looked, even though it’s usually the first and last part of the property you see or use. There are numerous simple and cost-effective ways in which you can create an attractive driveway. It can make the exterior of your home more pleasant, add value to the house and allow for safer parking of your car.

When looking to landscape a driveway or build a brand new one – it’s important to have a look at all the variables and choices available.

What different types of driveways are available? Common materials used on driveways consist of:

Block Paving

Block paving allows you to get creative in designing a unique and attractive driveway. You can  mix and match paving stones, utilise a variety of colours, shapes and sizes - allowing you the ultimate in personalisation.

Gravel

  • Gravel can be used in three different ways.
  • Bound Gravel is a very fine material providing you with a flat, level surface. It is also useful for using on footpaths or bridleways.
  • Loose gravel is very versatile and is available in many a wide range of styles, cuts and colours. For example Golden Flint incorporates bright golds, yellows and creams, Bubbenhall Quartz which provides a more neutral pigment. Loose Gravel is very common for use on - It will not lose its colouring in direct sunlight and is easily topped up as and when required.

Bonded Gravel is not only used on driveways but many other surfaces too. It has the advantage of being non-slip and very hard-wearing.

Cobbles

Cobbles are available in a wide variety of styles and colours. Cobbles also provide a very hard-wearing surface.

Paving Stones

Paving stones or slabs are often used on pathways and patios but if implemented carefully can also be ideal for driveways. Paving stones are available in a selection of different colours and styles and can be laid in a variety of patterns.

Tarmac

Tarmac is ideal for driveways as it is hard-wearing and very long-lasting. Tarmac can be found in a variety of colours.

Concrete

Similarly to tarmac, concrete is tough and hard-wearing. It is often used in other areas such as pavements and utility areas. Concrete is also available as a pattern imprinted concrete. This type of concrete can provide a selection of varied effects – e.g. the look of natural stone or wood.
