The Importance of Foreign Language Study in your Child’s Education

Many studies of the recent years have produced impressive conclusions on how a foreign language study can greatly help a child be come a better student and a more successful adult compared to those who have only been exposed to studying their native language. And because of the effects of globalization and the faster means of communication that we are now enjoying, a foreign language study should not be treated as a mere luxury or privilege anymore, but rather a necessity. Here are some more reasons that can vouch for the importance of foreign language study.

Just by learning a second language early on in life, a child will be able to develop a higher sense of tolerance and appreciation for different cultures, making them more adept with coping with different types of people. Aside from that, a child who has gone through a second language training is guaranteed to have better communication skills since they have a grasp of how two or more languages work. This gives them not just one mean to express themselves orally in one language, but in different languages and can also encompass their writing and comprehension abilities. Being well versed in two languages also has the effect of developing a wider vocabulary.

The importance of foreign language study cannot just be confined within the linguistic abilities but also in the matter of personality development. Children who have undergone some form of foreign language training are seen to be more patient, hard working and have a healthy level of self-esteem. This is because the study of a foreign language dares them to step out of their comfort zones and to venture out to learn something that is completely new to them. And once they get that ideal sense and feeling of being able to accomplish such a feat, they are generally more confident of themselves and thus have greater faith in their own capabilities.

Getting a grasp of a foreign language, as many people would easily put is, can become frustrating if you don’t have the right tools to get you started. This is why, if you’re thinking of exposing your child to the world of foreign language study, it’s important to find a curriculum that would be perfect for your child’s intellectual abilities and interests. If you settle for something easy, it could be seen as a boring activity but if you start with something difficult then it would bring on feelings of frustrations. You need to find a common ground, which can be fun and exciting for your child and also quite challenging as well.

When you choose a curriculum for your child, make sure that you let them in on the decision making process. Ask them what languages they think they would be interested in learning and go through the different pros and cons of that chosen language. Always impart with them the idea that the importance of foreign language study is for them and not just because of your own preferences.
