Purchasing a laptop for the first time is an important event in anyone's life. Each person has different needs, therefore not everyone will be satisfied with the same choice. However, all computers are made with the same basic functions and components that everyone needs in a different form.
The first thing to take a look at is the operating system. Most PCs come preloaded with a version of Microsoft. There are a few out there right now, including Windows XP and Windows Vista, so it's important to take a look at the features that each one offers to be sure it fits your needs. For example, if you are going to be using the computer for your personal use at home, than a standard Windows Vista Home Premium will be great for you. But, if you are using the device to operate a business, than you would want to look into a Professional version of either Windows XP or Vista.
The next important area would be the central processing unit (CPU). Some people don't need as fast of a CPU as others, but make sure you know how your activities on the laptop with be affected by that speed. Let's say that you're a hardcore gamer. In this case, you would want to look for a CPU speed of 2.0 GHz or higher. But, if you will be doing simple applications, such as email and surfing the web, than the standard 1.0 GHz should be fine for you.
Another important component to look at is the RAM. This is the overall memory that the computer has, and again, how much of it you need is totally dependent on how you plan on using the computer. Nowadays, most laptops come standard with 1 GB of RAM. That is plenty for people who do the basics rather than memory intensive applications. However, anybody who is looking to operate multiple or heavy applications, would be best served with the 2 GB of RAM.
The next thing to consider is the size of the laptop. If you plan on keeping it stationary for the most part, than you have the option of going larger. On the other hand, if you will be taking it on the go a lot, than something smaller in size will be your best bet. Remember, bigger is not always better.
Now that you have made a decision for your basic needs, it's time to think a little further. The internet is the main application that most people use on their computers and like every other feature, people have different needs. If the laptop is going to be staying in one spot, a basic cable or dial-up connection is suffice. However, if the computer will be mobile most of the time, than you will want to make sure that if has an integrated WiFi adapter.
Purchasing your first laptop is very rewarding if you keep these essentials in mind to optimize your chances of getting the perfect one for you.
