Looking for a Cheap Bankruptcy Attorney in Missouri or Illinois?

After deciding that they need a lawyer, many people aren't sure where to start. In the old days, you would flip through the phone book and look through advertisement after advertisement that listed the name of the firm with a stuffy picture and the area and state in which they practice. With the rising popularity of the internet, many now start with a search engine. But, before you start typing "cheap bankruptcy attorney in St. Louis Missouri," there may be a few things you want to consider.

As with any service, you get what you pay for. The first attorney that pops up in your search may indeed be the cheapest attorney in your area but he may also not be willing or experienced enough to handle your case properly. An attorney who doesn't charge much isn't expecting to do much work.

First, the fees charged by bankruptcy attorneys are regulated by the bankruptcy court. 99% of bankruptcy cases require the same amount of work. So, it would only make sense that most of us charge a similar hourly rate. Look for an attorney who is open and honest with you about the cost at the very beginning instead of one that waits until it is too late to tell you that you've got a surprise fee at the end of your case.

Second, think about what is really important. Ask yourself this: If you had to have open heart surgery, would you be searching for the cheapest doctor? You would be probably be looking for the best rather than the least expensive. Why take that risk when it comes to bankruptcy?

Third, look at what other kind of help your attorney is prepared to give you. Do they offer assistance after you file your case? There are certain mistakes that can be made after a bankruptcy that could leave you in the same place you started—or worse.

After 15 years of working in bankruptcy and even filing bankruptcy myself, I know the mistakes that can be made when looking for the right lawyer to handle your case. I see folks everyday who come to my office after another office didn't handle their case correctly or wasn't upfront with them about the true cost of their bankruptcy. I hope you can use this information to make sure you've found the right bankruptcy lawyer for your case. Just do the right research and keep the right facts in mind and you surely will find the perfect attorney for your case.
