Types of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the mesothelium, a thin layer of tissue covering almost all the internal organs of the body.

Two to three thousand people are diagnosed each year in the United States with mesothelioma. The areas of the body affected are:

Pleural mesothelioma affects the tissue surround the lungs and is the most common form seen of this disease

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the tissue surround the abdomen

Pericardial mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the heart

Mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis occurs in the lining of the testicles

Asbestos exposure is the primary risk factor for contracting mesothelioma, with workers that handle asbestos fibers at the greatest risk. Those who may encounter asbestos fibers include, but are not limited to:

Miners

Factory workers

Insulation manufacturer

Construction workers

Chemical plant employees

Ship builders

Automobile mechanics

The dust created when asbestos fibers are handled may settle in the lungs or abdomen if swallowed or inhaled. The presence of asbestos fibers causes irritation that may lead to mesothelioma, though how this process occurs is not totally understood by the medical community. The risk of contracting mesothelioma increases in those who are exposed to high levels of asbestos fibers, those exposed over a lengthy period of time and those exposed at a relatively young age. It is a known fact that it may take decades for a person to develop mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma

The symptoms of mesothelioma differ according to the area of the body affected. Pleural mesothelioma causes shortness of breath, painful breathing and coughing, chest pain, unexplained weight loss and lumps under the skin of the chest area. Peritoneal mesothelioma causes abdominal pain, swelling, constipation or diarrhea, lumps in the abodomen and unexplained weight loss. Mesothelioma of the pericardium causes chest pains and difficulty breathing.
