Improve Focus and Concentration through Sleeping

On August 31, 1997, the whole world saw one of the most tragic car accidents in modern time. Princes Diana, the much-adored princess the world over, was killed in a car crash in France. The car she was riding, a Mercedes-Benz S280 sedan, smashed into a tunnel pillar.

While there are numerous theories surrounding the accident, including putting the blame on the pestering photographers eager to take pictures of her, few ever wondered whether the car driver had a good sleep the night before the accident. Was the driver’s concentration at that very instance unquestionable? Or had he had less sleep, therefore, compromising his focus in driving?

Current studies imply that inadequate sleep has contributed to sizable problems in health and public safety. A US government-commissioned study shows that road accidents connected with lack of sleep alone can run up to tens of billions of dollars a year. Add to that amount the work-related and home accidents that occur due to insufficient sleep and the total cost would be enough to feed millions of people living below poverty line worldwide for at least a year.

Above the costs of accidents related to sleep deficiency, consider the physical losses caused by merely failing to have enough dozing time. Tens of thousands of deaths, plus hundreds of thousands of disabilities have been recorded in United States alone. This means lives and relationships have been forever altered just because people have too little time committed to sleeping.

These figures are absolute -- poor sleep habits affect concentration, memory, and overall health. Amazingly, sleeping too little everyday will eventually build up on a person. This means your body will collect all the sleeping time you owed your brain over a period of time. This will lead you to fatigue and a reduced ability to focus and concentrate on tasks at hand.

To avoid losing your job, your limbs, or, worse, your life, ensure that you are getting the right amount of sleep. While it is true that people know very little about the role of sleep in life, scientists are sure that sleep is a natural component of living. Just like breathing and eating, sleeping is an essential and basic requirement for survival; and, for our purposes, an accident-free life!

Studies show that getting a good amount of sleep can definitely improve one’s concentration. Some components of the human brain can increase activity levels and produce certain beneficial hormones that fire up your mental powers. In fact, sleeping has been directly linked to various restoration processes in the human body.

Here are suggestions for you to get a sufficient amount of sleep, to improve your focus and concentration.

1. Get into the habit of going to bed early at night. This will ensure that you will not be drowsy when you drive and work.

2. Quit smoking and avoid taking beverages laced with caffeine, such as coffee and alcohol. These things not only reduce your ability to sleep drastically, they also kill off your brain neurons.

3. Use self-hypnosis techniques to enable you to fall asleep immediately. And while you are in this self-hypnosis method, train your brain to focus and concentrate more.

4. Make your bedroom perfect for sleeping. For example, leave the television outside, seal off the holes or crannies where noise could penetrate, and snuggle into a comfortable bed. Not only will you be relaxed, you will be sure to examine the things in your life better, thereby, improving your concentration skills.

5. Be aware. Learn about the importance of sleep by reading various literatures about the subject and browsing the Internet.

Remember, a person with sleep deficiency is a tired person. You may be exposed to accidents as your focus and concentration is compromised. The difference between your survival and demise may be as easy and enjoyable as getting some much-needed snooze.

Thanks
