I have often been a person that felt that finding someone I could trust was like finding a gold nugget on the ground. Think about your friends that you trust. There is a freedom that allows you to have a discussion about anything you want, solve problems without argument, ask for help of any kind and expect it to be there. Trust is just a basic simple element of relationships that is very powerful.
In a recent article (September 7, 2009 Business Week Magazine) there were several stories about the power of Trust. My favorite was about a Donut shop. I love Donuts and the article quickly caught my attention! The owner of the Donut shop decided to build realtionships with his customers by leaving change out on the counter and letting people make their own change for their purchase. When he first implemented the idea he was questioned about being taken advanatge of. He heard many comments about people taking money and being dishonest. Much to the amazement of everyone, not only did he not have any problems with his customers and money gone missing, his client base started to grow. You see, everyone liked the fact that he reached out to show that he trusted his customers. He was rewarded back with trust as well and the trusting customers told their friends about what was happening. Wasn't long before his donut shop was the dominant shop in town! An amazing example of the power of trust.
In order for this trust relationship to build, someone has to reach out first. Are you the kind of person that would reach out or sit back and wait to be faced with a situation and you respond. The Donut shop proves the process of reaching out has its rewards.
I work in an online marketing business. In this business, everyone feels that you can't be trusted first. No matter what you do or say, you are not trusted. You can't blame anyone because there are many people that have proven they can't be trusted. That gets branded to anyone that has an online business can't be trusted. The same principal as the Donut shop in reverse! I have worked very hard recently at building tools into my web sites that allow me to break down the trust barrier. I provide my address and phone number and encourage people to email me and call me. My videos on the sites talk about trust and what that does for the online community. As I have reached out just like the Donut Shop owner did, I am starting to see results for my efforts.
