Successful implementation of the Six Sigma system can only occur with strategic planning at the outset of the process. The team must chart clear plans on areas of concern which will have far reaching effects during the project selection stage. The goal is to make basic decisions and take certain actions which will help guide the Six Sigma process to success. Sometimes, however, even well crafted strategic plans don't produce desired results.
There are many causes for processes to fail, but the major ones involve incomplete planning, inadequate planning and poor communication. Human capital is highly relevant in strategic planning, and team leaders often don't consider this important fact. There are always plans made for marketing, sales and product development, but the human factor is frequently ignored. The employees are important assets which are critical to the success of the plan.
There also must be some continuity with strategic plans as they are laid out. Failure to link them will jeopardize their implementation and ultimately the process. Often certain strategic plans are identified at the onset of the process, but are postponed to the following year's plans. It is important to lay out plans which can be undertaken and achieved in a specific time period. Otherwise, certain factors will be overlooked or skipped and the implementation could suffer from malfunction.
Lack of communication is a common reason many projects fail. When doing strategic planning, the objectives you define should always involve the employees of the company. All plans should be clearly communicated to them. By involving them, you will gain their support and often valuable information. If they understand the strategies, they can also help define any areas of resistance you may not otherwise see.
When commitments and goals are met, they should be followed by rewards. This will make reaching further organizational goals easier. Objectives and plans must be clear and easy to understand or they won't succeed. Even when objectives are difficult, clear communication can allow for their success. By linking strategies and avoiding these deadly mistakes, you can assure your project of success.
