Tips to write your insurance cancellation letter

You may choose to cancel your insurance policy at any point of time within your policy period. Since a policy is based on a written agreement, its cancellation also has to be in writing. Your notice regarding the cancellation of your insurance has to reach your carrier in advance. This process is common for all forms of insurance e.g. Auto insurance, health insurance and life insurance.

In order to go through a smooth policy cancellation process, it is essential that you go through a few good points that any insurance sample cancellation letter would contain:

• It is important for you to know the proper address that you need to mail it to and also check out the balance due or owed on the policy.
• Don't forget to mention the address of your carrier, the cancellation date as well as the account number of your policy.
• Be gentle but stay firm in your decision while informing your carrier about your cancellation.
• Express your willingness to be informed by your carrier as soon as the cancellation is put in force.
• Your letter should bring to the notice of your carrier any such amount that needs to be refunded to you or stand as due on the policy account. In order to pay for your dues you may attach your check with your letter.
• Your letter should highlight the fact that your carrier would no longer be authorized to demand any premium charges through your bank account or your credit card following the policy cancellation.
• Don't forget to put your signature on the cancellation letter as also attach a copy of the letter to your files.
• Your cancellation letter has to be mailed to your carrier through a certified mail. Don't forget to attach your request for a receipt in return.

By forwarding your cancellation request in writing, you are protecting your rights. You do have the right to have the details regarding such cancellation in your possession e.g. date of cancellation etc. You would also have the proof of your willingness to cancel your policy under circumstances when the carrier or your agent denies such requests. Apart from all these you may also call the customer service department to voice your decision.
