Home Office Design: Comfort Without Cost

If your home business is your primary source of income, you are no doubt spending a great many hours each day in the confines of your home office. And if you've been feeling less and less creative each time you open the office door in the morning, it might be time for a home office design makeover.

You don't have to go whole-hog to give your home office design a new look; there are a few small things you can do to make your home office feel less like a boring workplace and more like a fun environment in which you can get big things accomplished.

Let Mother Nature Do Some Decorating

If you're someone who counts every minute which you have to spend indoors as a minute to regret, bring the outdoors into your home office design. If you have windows, keep the blinds up or the curtains open; if you don't, treat yourself to some wall posters of Mother Nature's glories.

Fresh flowers can add fragrance and color to your home office design; green plants will not only add graceful elegance; they'll pump brain invigorating oxygen into the air. A small tabletop-or-shelf-sized fountain can offer soothing sounds of cascading water.

Keep The Distractions Out

Your home office design will ideally be situated so that you are not tempted by whatever activities are taking place elsewhere in the house. The sounds of the television or the smell of brownies wafting in from the kitchen can be enough to break the strongest concentration, so put your home office where nothing enticing will get in. You can always record the television shows for later viewing, and the brownies are not the best food choice for someone who spends a lot of time in front of a computer screen anyway.

Leave Space To Move

If you have the space to incorporate it into your home office design, reserve a spot in your office where you can get up and really stretch from time to time. Isometric stretching bands are great for getting tense, tired muscles to relax, and they fit on a shelf when you aren't using them.

One final tip on home office design: if you are just starting your home business, don't let your enthusiasm get the better of your judgment. Spending serious money on a professional decorator, plush carpeting, antique accents and state-of-the-art lighting should wait until your business has the client base to support them.

Lighting is especially important when your are looking at the design for your home office. You will need a good lighting source that is not too dim or too bright. People who wear glasses need to be especially conscience of the lighting, reflections from lights can be distracting. Besides long hours working in front of the computer causes eye strain, which in turn can cause long term eye damage and severe headaches.

Take the time to evaluate yourself, and create a home office design that will evoke comfort and productivity. A pleasant environment that you will want to return to happily day after day. You deserve it, and your business will reflect it.
