A sure-fire way to motivate employees is to make them feel like big shots in your outfit. And a great way to do that is to help them see just how their jobs - whether big or small, out front or behind the scenes - contribute to the mission of your outfit.
Tell your receptionist how a friendly voice and helpful attitude adds to quality customer service. Let the folks in the warehouse know their prompt handling of products is necessary for good teamwork. Share with your sales staff how honest sales pitches are essential to your mission of integrity.
Employees also need to know that how well they do their job will directly affect how well every one else does theirs. In team roping, if the first cowboy, or header, doesn't rope the steer's horns just right and swing the steer around, the second cowboy, or heeler, struggles to do his job of roping the back feet.
When a salesman doesn't fill out his paperwork accurately, the numbers don't add up in accounting. When the marketing department isn't consistent with their advertising, then sales drop. Not only does everyone struggle, but the reputation and profitability of the whole organization suffers.
Another way to make employees feel valued is to show them how their individual job contributes to a better community or improves the quality of people's lives.
Retail clerks realize that they're doing more than bagging products; they're providing a helpful, friendly shopping atmosphere that customers will want to return to. Conscientious customer service reps understand that they don't just answer the phone, but are the problem solvers of their organization.
Make your employees feel like big shots by showing them how their job contributes to your mission, how the quality of their work affects the quality of the entire team's work, and how their job plays a role in improving people's lives. When you do, they will take great pride in their work and be motivated to ride for your brand!
