Rounding up the ideas of your staff is a great motivating technique, but to be a truly top notch trail boss, you have to take it a step further. Move 'em out and let 'em run with their ideas.
Give employees the chance to put their new methods into practice. Once they've come up with a workable plan, give them the go-ahead to rearrange, reorganize and refine your outfit.
If you let them, employees will come up with better communication systems, customer service techniques, worker incentives and even better arrangements of your office layout.
Now that doesn't mean you should turn your employees loose and let them go hog-wild. Ask them to run their ideas by you and keep you apprised of their plans. Act as a consultant and lend some of your wisdom and expertise along the way.
When employees come up with a procedure that's a bit iffy, let them have free rein to experiment with it, tweaking as they go. Experimenting with an idea that doesn't work will often spark an even better idea that does.
Sometimes employees will come up with an idea that you tried 5 years ago with no success. Before you reject it on that basis, take into consideration any changes in technology, attitudes, economics and circumstances that might make that idea feasible now.
Some of their ideas won't be workable at all. If that's the case, then take the time to explain why. People handle the rejection of their idea a lot better when they understand the reasons for it.
To truly motivate your employees, do more than just round up their thoughts -move 'em out by putting their ideas to work. Your staff will appreciate the trust and confidence you show them. Plus they'll feel a huge sense of pride knowing they've helped create a smooth running outfit!
