Any boss who is looking to operate a successful business in the present climate will have had to consider the possible benefits of a corporate team building event at one time or another. These events are planned in a number of different circumstances - to reward a team for an improved monthly performance, to bring a team together when there has been an influx of new members, or for any number of other reasons. Having a good team ethic in place is vitally important if you want to hit the heights on a corporate level, and by aiming to bring your team together outside an immediate work context you can create bonds which will come in extremely useful when the chips are down in an office environment.
To get a team building event right, it is essential to pay attention to the meaning of the phrase. "Team Building" suggests very thoroughly that there is some element of putting together something that was not already in place. Therefore, team building events should not be an excuse for members of the team who are already close to disappear off together and ignore the reasons behind coming away for an event. This necessitates a structure to the event which allows, and even encourages, the mixing up of team members who may not have spent much time together before. There may be some resistance early on, but this is something that is dependent on your input to overcome it.
People naturally gravitate to others with whom they have something in common, and will flock together with the ones they already know. This is why a team building event needs to have a proportion of "getting to know you" events involved in it. The decision on how deep the revelations go is entirely up to the team members in question, of course, but a team who are close will provide a comfortable environment in which to discover more about one another. As for forcing together members of the team who may not ordinarily socialize, this is tricky. It is best not to force people together one-to-one, but to create groups of people, between four and six in number, and allow a dynamic to emerge. This way you can separate the people who know each other quite well enough, while maintaining the incentive to find out about the others in one's own group.
It is often claimed that team building events take up too much of the average corporate budget. However, if the thinking that goes into organizing one is directed sensibly enough, it will always be money well spent. There can be no doubting that a well-run team building event can lead to improved performance in the office. Organizing it will test the manager, and a success on this front can embolden any manager to trust their judgement and have it trusted by team members. Furthermore, such events can be an awful lot of fun for the team, the manager and each individual. They allow us all to see work in a more positive light.
