Why Six Sigma Is Preferred The World Over

Many businesses that have implemented Six Sigma are now deriving the associated benefits such as improved quality, enhanced efficiency and near-perfect business processes that do not produce more than 3.4 defects per million opportunities that might exist for such defects to occur.

All this, despite the fact that the concept itself has undergone various changes over the years, mainly to accommodate the new business variations and technological advancements that have taken place in the last few years.

To understand why Six Sigma is preferred the world over, we will have to first analyze the revitalized Six Sigma concept.

The Basics of the Evolved Six Sigma Concept

Due to rising competition, the Six Sigma concept has now become more customer-oriented, which is quite different from what it was a few decades back. During its initial years, Six Sigma was used only for reducing the total number of defects without giving much thought to what it would do in terms of customer satisfaction. At that time, it was assumed that what matters most for a business was its profitability, which Six Sigma helped to improve by reducing defects and wastage of essential resources.

Profitability is still the primary motive, but since the basic requirements for maximizing profitability has changed, Six Sigma has evolved to accommodate the new changes. Consumers have now become more aware about quality and costs and their basic expectations have also increased dramatically over the years. For overcoming these challenges, Six Sigma has undergone a complete turnaround.

It now puts more emphasis on understanding customer needs and expectations before actually making changes in the existing business processes or designing and developing new products or services from scratch. This new concept has proven to be a boon for businesses because it allows them to increase the probability that the initiated changes will have the desired affect on quality, costs and of course customer satisfaction levels.

If everything goes well, businesses will be able to offer improved products and services, something that will contribute a lot towards attracting new customers as well as retaining existing ones.

The Increasing Versatility of the Evolved Six Sigma Concept

By embracing technology and by consistently devising new tools and techniques, the evolved Six Sigma has become increasingly versatile over the years. Since size and nature of businesses are no longer the criterion for deriving the benefits of Six Sigma, it becomes quite easy to understand why Six Sigma has now become the preferred option for businesses worldwide.

Businesses that implement Six Sigma automatically develop that much-needed competitive edge over their competitors. This is why more and more businesses have now started opting for Six Sigma implementations. Since at present there is no other quality management concept that is just as effective, it is anticipated that Six Sigma will continue to reign supreme and remain the preferred option for most businesses in the years to come.
