If you are the type of person who is always buying and reading information on how to promote, market and get traffic to your site, you could be a "spit and whittle" promoter.
A little explanation is probably needed for those of you who have no clue what a "spit and whittle" promoter is.
Many years ago there was a group of ol' timers who sat out on the main street of town. Each of them chewed tobacco and used a knife to whittle on a hand piece of wood. Their animated conversations involved "solving world problems" and other important local issues. Their visits lasted for many hours especially on the weekends.
The point here is that they never did anything but talk about things. They never actually did anything but spit and whittle.
Many folks who set out to make a living on the internet are much like the spit and whittle crew. They do a lot of reading of marketing and promotion materials, but they never do anything with what they have learned.
Information is a lot like a parachute. It doesn't work if you don't open it and use it. It may be the most valuable information in the world, but if you don't apply and use it, it's worthless.
Now there is nothing wrong with learning and discovering new approaches and methods of doing things, but at some point you need to stop reading and learning and start doing something.
Take some promotional action!
Very few, if any, have ever taken the time to sit down and write out their goals and their marketing plan to achieve them. These are important steps if you want to achieve something on line.
An archer has a target with a bulls eye in the center. He knows what he is trying to accomplish. He has a goal. He makes his best effort every time he looses an arrow to hit that target and meet his goal.
It is easy to become fascinated with all of the things offers on the internet. Specifically I am talking about digital software products. Some of this fancy, expensive software and programs can really seem appealing.
"Just click this button and receive tons of traffic".
If you believe that, you probably hit the start button and shutdown your computer. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Promotion and marketing takes work and lots of it. It takes discipline to make a plan of promotion and stick with it. Simple post-it notes might work for some people to serve as reminders of what they need to do and when to do it. Others might need an alarm reminder to jog their memories and keep them on schedule.
The good news is that it can be done, and there are several simple, effective ways to go about promotion without spending an arm and a leg.
Don't become a member of the spit and whittle club. Whatever it takes to get your promotional juices flowing, do it today!
