How to Prevent Click Fraud While Marketing On Yahoo Or Google Adwords

I am sure that if you are reading this article you already have an understanding of how ay per click search engines work. Therefore i am not going to get in to that. What i am going to explain is the definition of click fraud and how to fight it.

What is click fraud?

Click fraud occurs when you place a keyword in a category for PPC advertising and your competitor keeps clicking on your link with the intention of costing you too much money to stay any where near him. This could be very costly to you. At 3-4 dollars a click if your competitor clicks on your link a few hundred times this could end up costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

How do most CPC search engines fight this type of fraud?

Most search engines boast that they protect you from this type of fraud by monitoring for duplicate clicks from the same ip address in a short period of time. They claim that it is in their benifit to protect you from this type of fraud because they want to keep you as a long term client.

Is it really in their best interest to protect you from this type of fraud?

They may be doing some moitoring but there are many loop holes to their moitoring. For example i did an anlaysis on my call logs and found the following. there were many ip addresses that had more than a few hundred clicks from the same ip address coming from my yahoo campaign.

What happened in the end?

i beleive that I am now due a large credit. they have already hinted to me about large isps using the same pool of ip addresses.I dont beleive it because its too much of a coincedence or for hundred of the same ip addresses to be clciking on my site. My gut feeling tells me its fraud. If they somehow come up with a reason for it not being fraud i will get a court order for the isp to identify the users on the given dates. I will use that information to prove that it is fraud.

How do i get my web logs?
For my shopping cart I use a software called Merchantkey.com.
Their customer service was very helpfull in obtaining the web logs for me. If you dont have this kind of service you can find the location by going in to iis and right clicking on the site in question. Than select properties. Than click on properties again. The directory of the web logs shoul dbe visible on this tab.
