Proper Implementation is Key With Web Analytics

Several people have expressed questions and concerns about implementing Google Analytics, or other web analytics applications across their websites. One person in particular had attempted to implement the software previously but was getting skewed numbers. He was looking on his "geo location" tab and saw that a large percentage of his traffic was coming from his city. We looked at his profile, and saw that the traffic was internal to his business, as his employees used the website as a reference tool in their day to day duties. Creating a filter to exclude internal traffic cleared that up swiftly, but that is just one example of how setting up web analytics is more than just implementing script on your websites. As part of integration and implementation users should create custom filters like what were described above. another client was getting reports that listed product ids, so when they viewed reports they had to cross reference their website to see what the product id was referring to. Creating a custom filter to rename that to their preference name saved the client hours of frustration of having to alt+tab to see what each aspect of the reports was referring to. Making sure that the initial setup of your web analytics is correct will save considerable headaches in the future. Look to your web analytics help forum, or technical support division if you need further resources.
