Beer mug designs are not limited to imposing glasses with distracting dimpled surfaces. They come in a multitude of shapes and sizes that are, in fact, personalized to a particular beer. They are designed specifically to enhance a beer's characteristics, distinguishing it from other types. Some display effervescence and clarity in a long and thin vessel, while a few are bowl-shaped to intensify aroma and highlight the beer head. There are also personalized beer mugs that showcase elaborate graphic stoneware textures. These, by the way, are called beer steins (traditional German versions may come in pewter, silver, wood, porcelain, earthenware or glass). With a hinged lid and levered thumblift, these personalized beer mugs are designed to prevent flies from getting into the beer.
Personalized beer mugs such as tulips and snifters, whose shape allows swirling to agitate volatiles, are especially good for holding in the pungent flavor of brandy and cognac. The American shaker pint glass, meanwhile, offers little aroma containment, as it is more suitable for serving stouts, porters and English ales. But it is often described as one of the personalized beer mugs that are bad choices for tasting no matter what logo is sprayed on the side, thanks to the flared top. So avoid it. Anyway, here are some of the favorites:
Flute glass
A personalized beer mug for Belgian lambic and fruit beer. Its narrow shape helps maintain carbonation while providing a strong aromatic front. Flute glasses showcase the carbonation that occurs, featuring no less than the sparkling color and soft lacing of this process.
Goblet or Chalice
Stemmed, bowl-shaped personalized beer mug adequate for serving heavy Belgian ales, German bocks and other big-sipping beer. A goblet looks more delicate as it has thin walls. A chalice, on the other hand, is heavy and thick walled. Some chalice-type personalized beer mugs are etched on the bottom to attract carbon dioxide and provide a stream of bubbles, maintaining a nice head.
Ochoko
It is the most-popular beer mug for sake. A small cup seen in countless varieties, colors and shapes, the ochoko is typically broad at the neck to allow the fragrance of the sake to waft gently upward.
Pilsner glass
A pilsner design is generally a personalized beer mug for light beer, but it is primarily intended for its namesake, the pilsner. Pilsner glasses are smaller than a pint glass, usually with 250 or 330 mL capacity. Tall, slender and tapered without a curvature, such personalized beer mugs showcase the color, effervescence and clarity of the pilsner. They also create a well-formed beer head.
Wheat Beer glass
A wheat beer glass is a personalized beer mug used to serve wheat beer, known also as Weizenbier. This German glass holds up to 500mL and still has room for foam. Much taller than pint glasses, such personalized beer mugs are very narrow at the bottom and slightly wider at the top. The height allows for thick, fluffy heads and intense aroma.
New Glass for the Craft Beer
An unnamed glass design was created by Jim Koch, founder of Sam Adams Brewery, in order to "elevate the craft beer experience". This personalized beer mug is shaped similar to a wheat beer glass, complete with a large bulb near the top of the glass. The latter, however, is much shorter. Such an uncategorized personalized beer mug has an outward lip, delivering the beer to the front of the tongue where sweetness of the malt is tasted.
