This is just a quick dissection of the anatomy of good self promotion.
A lot of us know about self promotion and some of us know of self promotion. But most of us know almost nothing about “how to” launch a successful self promotion.
If you’re one of those folks, well, you’re not alone. Feel better?
As a graphic designer for 8 years, I had been wrapped around mostly on a single dimension on how to promote a business, product, idea, or service, and that is to gamble heavily on the power of aesthetics.
It sounds very shallow but it works. Beautiful things sell. A better packaged cereal box will sell better than other ones with plain looking logo and boring colors. Am I right?
Let me ask you something which you must answer honestly. What is the most single factor that gets your attention from your opposite sex? If you said “personality”, you’re lying and you know it. Because the hard truth is that it is the cover of the book that gets our first attention. It’s just the way our mind and body work and react. Nothing to be ashamed of, so stop denying!
But I digress; aesthetic is an important factor of marketing and self-promoting but that’s only the beginning on any of your self-promotion campaign. So, dressing up and looking good for a job interview or a business meeting does increase the chances of you closing the deal.
But what if, with your fine looking self, started talking and two things happens; 1) you forgot to take a breath mint and 2) you started rambling on about something that doesn’t make any sense about why they should hire you for your services or buy the product that you’re suppose to be selling! Game over.
The good news is that you do not always have to self-promote live in person. Most of our self promotions are via marketing collaterals or printed materials. However, the same principle applies.
I always believe in the four dimensions of self-promotion; 1) look sharp, 2) sound convincing, 3) generate positive aura, and 4) deliver hard facts and benefits.
To win a battle you must cover all the ports of entry. Get them cornered to a point that they have no choice but to surrender.
We must all understand that though there is no one way of accomplishing a successful campaign and self promotion, there has to be stages of procedures, follow ups, and execution. A successful self promotion is just a door opener to your business but not to be underestimated. Once the door is opened, enter and go for the kill, which is another topic altogether.
