Paul Friedman’s entry into the business of helping couples mend their marriages began with a very rough personal experience with divorce. Paul came out of an early retirement to become a mediator. His belief was that couples could easily work out the details of separation and get on with their lives. He discovered the truth from his clients:they only sought divorce because the help they found to stay together didn't work.

Imagine waking up in the morning and the first thought that comes into your mind is a sweet thought of gratitude. Imagine looking over to where your true love lies as a smile comes across your face confirming your love. Imagine the feeling of contentment that sweeps over you as you think about your children and how much you love your family. Remember the excitement you felt when you realized the person you are with wanted to be your partner to love you, support you and raise a family with you. Remember how much good you saw in your partner and how the little flaws you saw barely got your attention. Remember how you would have long conversations or just sit and hold each other, or perhaps lay in each other's arms.
Dream marriages begin in your heart
The heart is more than just a pump pushing blood throughout the body. Although it is marvelous in its physical capacity it also serves as a nest of love within you. It is no coincidence that when you feel great love or great anguish the actual feeling takes place in your heart. Western science is in its infancy and so like a little baby, only trusts that which it can see, feel, taste and touch. But ancient science acknowledges the reality of the unseen. It recognizes that dorsal center of the body as the seat of deep feeling. What is even less understood in the west is that feelings and thoughts are our servants and must be controlled by us. When we don't control them, they will indeed control us.
- *Open your heart
- * feel the love
- * swim in the love that you feel
- * direct the love to your spouse and each member of your family
Feeling love is not enough
If you were sitting in a beautiful field that overlooked a majestic valley with the sun shining and a soft breeze playing in your hair you would be moved and you would experience wonderful thoughts and feelings. Our environment prods us towards happiness, sadness, boredom or excitement, but it is not outer conditions alone that are responsible for our feelings. We have great power that stems from our will. Once we decide something will happen, as long as we don't try to control others, we will indeed make it happen. The first and most important place to impose your will is upon your own mind. Thoughts and feelings come and go based upon habits. Learn to control your most personal environment, your mind.
- • Consciously watch the thoughts in your mind
- • Consciously watch the feelings from a higher vantage point
- • Practice kicking out thoughts that are not beneficial
- • Practice inviting in thoughts that are beneficial
A dream marriage is within your power
You don't realize how simple it is to achieve the kind of marriage you have always wanted. You have listened to the TV programs, read the magazine articles and heard the desperate people calling in to the radio psychologists. You have been brainwashed into thinking marriage is hard work and fighting is natural but it isn't so. A true dream marriage only requires knowledge of what it takes to make one. A dream marriage is not a fairy tale anymore than a functioning business is a myth. If you know how to do it and it is not above you to learn, you will have your dream marriage. Open your heart and tell your spouse "I love you."
