Has Marriage Family Counseling Let You Down?

Each year that goes by new statistics regarding decreasing marriage rates and increased divorce rates around the country are released feeding the debate on whether a couple should take each others hands in marriage. With divorce rates being so high it is no wonder that people are not getting married as much anymore. You talk to your seemingly happy couple friends to find out that they’re in marriage counseling, and have been for years. Somehow as couples go, they never learned how to communicate and so they use a marriage counselor as their mediator. Marriage family counseling is supposed to be used a short term tool to allow you to fix your marriage and move forward, it is not supposed to be used as a crutch to get through the duration of your marriage.

You will always hear about marriage counseling and how it has saves marriages, but you also will hear from plenty of divorced couples that will tell you that they chose to pursue marriage counseling only to be left disappointed by the counselor that was chosen. All too often you hear stories about the counselors themselves could not remain unbiased and chose one persons side over the other instead of being a neutral party to what is supposed to be a healing time for the couple. Obviously couples enter into marriage counseling to stop divorce, but in a lot of cases it’s already to late to “counsel” on the problems that have been eating at both of you and divorce is impending.

Most couples don’t want to be divorced but they end up that way because they don’t know what to. Going through marriage counseling may seem to be a fantastic idea but when you do, you have to bring out things that you’re angry about and lay on the table for the counselor and your spouse to mull over and possibly make situations worse.
