My Husband Spends Too Much Time with His Friends! Marriage Advice for Women
Marriage is all about two equals coming together, right? It tends to feel that way in the days before the wedding and during the honeymoon phase but it can all change as you two settle into real life. No one has an ideal marriage, but we all strive to make our relationship with our spouse the very best it can be. We want that and as women we need to feel close to our husbands in every way possible. So what happens when his friends take on a bigger role than you'd like in the relationship? If you feel your husband spends too much time with his friends you've got a problem on your hands that isn't always that easy to solve. Being diplomatic about the friends situation is a must but you also want to ensure your husband understands that you want your needs to come first.
Before you say anything to your husband about the fact that you feel he spends too much time with his friends, you have to consider whether your feelings are coming from a place of jealousy or reason. It's easy to become envious of the bond that a man has with his best friends. They seem to have nothing but fun together and they get to go on interesting excursions and indulge their hobbies. If you're a wife sitting at home waiting for her husband to come home from time with his friends, you may just be feeling jealous that they are the ones who get to have all the fun with your husband. If that's the case, it can prove very helpful if you arrange some outings of your own during those times. Instead of waiting for him to find time for you, fill in your own time with other things. This not only will help you to resent his friends less but it will give you a new focus and that does enrich your own experience as a woman and wife too.
If you feel that your husband is just being selfish when he chooses to spend time with his friends over you, that's a concern that needs to be addressed. If you've asked him to spend more time with you and less with them and he hasn't considered it, you need to speak to him about it again. Make it clear that although you welcome the fact that he has good friends, you feel somewhat neglected and would like to spend more time doing things as a couple. Stay calm during this conversation as it will help your husband to understand that you're not coming at him from a place of emotion. Men tend to retreat and go into defensive mode if they feel their wives are attacking them about something they did wrong.
You're also going to have to get a bit proactive with this. You need to create experiences for your husband and you to participate in together. Tell him that one night a week is reserved just for you and then set out to make those nights memorable. Maybe you might decide to get courtside tickets for when his favorite team plays next or perhaps you want to tackle the rock climbing wall at the local gym together. Even indulging in a fast food dinner on the sofa while watching his favorite action movie on television counts. It's all about creating new experiences together that will make him want to spend more and more time with you.
