When a man has an affair it is typically much easier for him to end it because his psycho-physiological needs are much simpler and an astute wife knows just what she needs to do in order to recapture her husband’s heart.  Most women, when faced with the loss of their husband become very intelligent and win him back.  Some, who put pride ahead of practicality, sacrifice their children’s lives as well as their own in order to prove a point. The intentional harshness of the above is meant to illustrate the most important point of all:   Regardless of what has taken place in the past every marital relationship could and should be restarted, leaving the past behind. I'd like to make a comment on Paul Friedman's article, especially the section that alludes to the view that it becomes difficult for a women to retrace her steps back to the relationship when she is already seeing someone else. I'm not sure if you base this view on statistics or experience with couples. From experiences that I've encountered in helping couples, it appears that women are harder to opt for reconciliation once they have made up their mind that they are moving on with another person - man on the other hand, tend to reconsider the new relationship, and reconcile with their wives. My comments are actually confirming your findings (either through research or experience). Thanks.
