Selecting the Perfect Wedding Cake

When organizing your wedding, the decision of what you would like your wedding cake to resemble can be a difficult but important choice.  Would you like it to be big or little?  What shape?  How many tiers?  Which flavors do you like best for cake?  Do you even like traditional cake or would you prefer cheesecake?  Do you go with a typical white cake or do you choose something less traditional to exemplify your unique taste? The very first task you should tackle when choosing your cake is to decide the number of  guests you’ll be expecting to feed.  Now take that list and slice it in half.  That’s the number of people who, in all likelihood actually attend your ceremony and festivities.  And approximately 2/3 of them will actually eat the cake.  From there, you get to choose if you want a wedding cake with 2 tiers or one with 8. Now is when you want to start searching for your bakeries and determining the prices.  Does it make more sense for your own budget to have a single tiny cake for the bride and groom to cut while a larger sheet cake feeds everyone else?  Some do this and it works quite well.  And while looking around at your costs, you should look into the price difference of using fondant as opposed to not using fondant.  Fondant can be beautiful but can also place a heavy dent in your budget.  Another huge thing you’ll need to look into with your bakery is whether there is a hidden charge for setting up on the important day.  Some places charge you to have them come out to set it up while other places don’t. When you chat with your bakery, they’ll want to hear how you want the cake decorated.  Will you be wanting to use real flowers or fondant flowers?  What sort of cake topper do you want?  Do you use a serving set of your own or do you need them to provide it? Choosing your wedding cake can be a time consuming and aggravating task.  Or it can be a fun and joyous task.  It’s all how you make it.  I recommend putting the wedding cake decisions at the head of your list so you can finish it up quickly and mark one important task off that list.  It’s amazing how fast time passes and how overwhelming those last few months before the wedding can be.  Don’t procrastinate….do the homework now and when it comes down to the important moment, you’ll only have tiny decisions to make about your wedding cake!
