The Best Way To Save Your Marriage Is To Embrace The Conflict

Many states in the USA allow divorces to one or both of a couple to end their marriage just because they consider there are irreconcilable differences.  But when you think about it any marriage should have irreconcilable differences.    There is little doubt that the best way to save your marriage is to embrace the conflict that is present in any close relationship between the couple.

The common image of couples in the process of getting a divorce is that of people perpetually shouting at each other.   The reality is that there may be better ways of communicating, but at least they are communicating!   They are being more successful than couples who refuse any conflict because they don’t want to express what they believe and what they need.

Yet it is these silent partners who need to save marriage through embracing conflict.

Emotional and verbal abuse is clearly not a good thing for a relationship.  This said, couples who deny that problems and differences exist, are considered by eminent researchers to be more at risk of a relationship breakup than their vociferous counterparts

It is very important when you are looking to save your marriage that you learn to talk with each other and express any differences you may have.  Here are some suggestions for improving communication in your marriage:

You must start by giving the time that is necessary to your relationship to permit proper communication between the couple.   You relationship will eventually drift into difficulties if you do not announce your differences and share your strong points.   You have to make sure that you keep regular time available for just the two of you.

You have to learn to listen to your partner.  This means total and not intermittent attention.

You have to learn to listen to your partner.  This means total and not intermittent attention.  There is little point in expressing your needs in the relationship when your partner is not paying total attention, as certain things said will not be heard.

If your partner seems miserable you have to find out why.   Have you done something that has displeased them?   Or it may be for a reason that has nothing to do with you.  If you don’t ask, you will never know the answer

Partners in relationship difficulties tend to move apart and eventually they tend to each rest in their own separate worlds.  If this happens to you, you must each try to understand what is happening in each others world, if you are to save your marriage.

Don’t judge your partner. Listen to them when they express their needs and say what you want but accept what the other has said and don’t criticize them.

You must be honest about your wants and needs.  Couples who avoid conflict are not.  Only when you start to say what you really think will you start to save your relationship.

It is hard to keep a good marriage but if it’s worth it you can succeed in saving it, even if there is not only more communication but also more conflict.
