Working Out With Your Spouse
Who would have known that working out with your spouse could reap so many benefits?
Statistics have shown couples who workout together stay together longer and are happier than those couples who don’t. When you really look at it, it does make sense because not only do you have a workout buddy but your spending quality time with your spouse and that helps create more time to communicate which is great for all relationships. The gym environment usually decreases stress in a person and if you’re working out with your spouse who is also decreasing stress, then obviously that will help out your relationship tremendously.
Sometimes people are a tad hesitant to workout with their partner if they already spend a lot of time together. However if you do it right, then only could things will evolve in the long run. Here are some tips to working out successfully with your spouse:
· Be consistent – No matter what! Set a designated time that’s good for you and your mate and do your best to schedule all appointments around that time. And if for whatever reason you and your spouse are having a bad day, go to the gym together anyway to spend some quality time.
· Support one another – Make each other feel good during the workout. Compliment your spouse on a good set or reaching a new fitness milestone. If your spouse doesn’t feel like working out one day, don’t just say “ok, I’m going to go by myself” but motivate them into coming anyway (unless they’re sick).
· Work together as a unit – If you feel that your spouse is slacking, tell them that but in an encouraging way. Don’t EVER make your spouse feel bad for not being able to do certain exercises. Be patient!
· Communicate often – Be respectful of the people around you in regards to the volume of your voice and nature of your conversation but definitely talk to your spouse. Remember that communication is key for all relationships.
· Reward achievements – Surprise your spouse with something that they’ve wanted for a long time when they have achieved a specific goal – show them that you are proud of them.
· Have fun – Don’t forget to have fun together! I understand that your working out with specific goals in mind but definitely make it an enjoyable experience. When looking at the big picture of your relationship, getting into or staying in shape is only part of the reward. Of course, there is a variety of things that make a relationship successful but working out with your spouse is something that I believe every couple should try. The couple that works out together, stays together!
