Many people are under the mistaken impression that mixed martial arts is a new thing. Actually, MMA dates back quite awhile. MMA is a full contact sport that uses multiple fighting techniques. If you watch carefully, you can see Bruce Lee use MMA in his movies. He believed martial arts techniques were useless if they could not be used in a practical situation.
However, MMA dates back even further than Bruce Lee. MMA documents go back to 600 B.C. The Roman Empire had a more violent and brutal form of mixed martial arts in the earliest Olympic Games.
Of course, Bruce Lee brought forth the modern form when he popularized it in his movies. He trained in several different forms of fighting including Karate, Jujitsu, Judo and boxing. He trained his body in ways no one had in the past and delved into the science of fighting. He learned so much about the body that he was able to develop the highly legendary one-inch punch.
Mixed martial arts really hit the scenes with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 1993. Then Royce Gracie came in and was practically unstoppable with his snake like fighting style. Shortly thereafter, more superstars came in like Ken Shamrock, Kimo Leopoldo, Matt Hughes, and BJ Penn just to name a few.
In the beginning there were very few rules and it was amazing to watch. Later on, the MMA promoters added more rules and added weight classes for safety reasons. This made it more acceptable to a wider public. It is still amazing to watch and is easily recognizable by the octagon ring.
Mixed martial arts has become one of the most popular sports out there. It has reached more of an audience than wrestling or boxing. The fights are readily available on pay-per-view and cable.

By: Dr. Gary S. Goodman | 05/01/2010America is not homogeneous. We have more than 100 nationalities, so we should use caution in stereotyping. Still, there are overall proclivities and inclinations. And one of them is that there is more of a "Me, first" attitude here, than a "We, first." Do Eastern dojos suffer as a result?

Pop somebody up the nose with a palm and bone shards will spear into his brain and kill him, except there isn't any bone in the nose, its all cartilage. And all those old legends, a lot of them are good for not much more than washing the hog, if you feel like washing the hog.
