Antibiotics as a Cure for Stomach Ulcer

Stomach ulcer refers to open lesions and ulcerations in the stomach. Statistics show that more than two percent of the population of the United States are diagnosed with stomach ulcer each year and it is estimated that about eight to ten per cent of these people are at risk of developing various forms of ulcer over the years. In the United States there are about half a million annual cases of stomach ulcer. The disorder has the highest incidence in males, and it mostly affects people over 50 years.

Stomach ulcer is considered a serious disorder. In the absence of medical treatment, stomach ulcer can lead to complications such as perforation of the stomach and internal bleeding. There are many forms of treatment for a stomach ulcer in the present. However, the problem with most drugs is that they only provide temporary symptomatic relief, allowing the disease to recur soon after the medical treatment prescribed.

Ulcer of the stomach is a digestive disorder that occurs due to physiological abnormalities (low production of bicarbonate in the stomach, poor integrity of the lining of the stomach of the protective sheathing, inadequate flow of blood mucous overproduction of pepsin and gastric acid) or infection by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. Although these bacteria are known to be a major cause of stomach ulcers, most doctors neglect this aspect and that standardization of prescribing drugs for the stomach, the production of digestive juices. Although antacids and other drugs commonly used to treat stomach ulcers can keep the disease under control, they can not completely overcome the ulcer. Unless the treatment with antacids is monitored on a regular basis, the symptoms of stomach ulcers are very likely to reoccur.

One of the most common drugs used to treat stomach ulcers is Tagamet. This ulcer drug acts to reduce levels of gastric acid and pepsin in the stomach. The problem with antacids Tagamet and others, is that they provide only short-term effects. Most of those affected by a stomach ulcer experience a relapse of the disease, shortly after the discontinuation of Tagamet.

Given that the underlying cause of stomach ulcers is an infection by Helicobacter pylori, people living with the disease should also receive medical treatment with antibiotics. Research results indicate that those with a stomach ulcer that required treatment with antibiotics such as amoxicillin or penicillin have experienced a considerable improvement of their ulcer. In addition, most people with a stomach ulcer that followed treatments with antibiotics have been permanently cured. Unlike antacids, antibiotics can provide long-term effects for people affected by a stomach ulcer, which minimizes the chances of relapse.

Two-week course of amoxicillin is usually sufficient to overcome the infection with Helicobacter pylori. Corroborated with antacids, antibiotic treatment can successfully cure stomach ulcers, reducing the chances of relapse.
