Chlamydia Symptoms, Treatment and Advice

Chlamydia is a very common sexually transmitted disease (STD). In the United States, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that in 2006, over one million chlamydial infections were reported to CDC from fifty states and the District of Columbia. In the United Kingdom, it is reported that one person in ten between the ages of fifteen and twenty five who are sexually active are infected with Chlamydia.

Chlamydia symptoms typically become evident within three weeks of sexual contact with an infected person. Chlamydia is frequently termed as the "Silent STD" because in a large percentage of chlamydial infections, people show absolutely no symptoms at all. It is estimated that approximately 75 % of women and 50 % of men show no signs of the disease when infected.

When symptoms do occur in women, they frequently include vaginal discharge, pain or a burning sensation during urination, abdominal pain, pain during sexual intercourse, fever, nausea, and vaginal bleeding between periods.

In men, common symptoms include burning or painful urination, white cloudy discharge from the penis, burning or itching around the opening or the tip of the penis, as well as pain or swelling of the testicles.

The most straightforward Chlamydia treatment consists of a course of antibiotics. Chlamydia treatment can be achieved with a single dose of Zithromax (Azithromycin) or a week's course of Doxycycline (Doxycycline Hyclate). Both of these antibiotics are extremely effective.

Complications can occur should Chlamydia be left untreated. For women the complications can be more serve. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) occurs when Chlamydia bacterium travels upwards into the female reproductive system. This complication occurs in nearly 40% of women who do not receive treatment for chlamydia. PID can lead to infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and potentially fatal ectopic pregnancies. Women infected with chlamydia are also up to five times more likely to contract HIV if exposed, than women with a healthy reproductive system.

Similar to gonorrhea, chlamydia is also responsible for an increased risk of premature birth. During birth, a new born is also likely to contract the infection while moving through the birth canal. If a new born baby contacts a Chlamydia infection during birth, it can suffer from serious eye problem or pneumonia.

In men, chlamydia complications are relatively less serve in most cases. However, infection can spread to the epididymis, or the tube that carries sperm from the testicles. This can lead to pain, fever, and sterility. Other symptoms of Chlamydia include skin lesions, inflammation of the eyes, arthritis, and meningitis.

The best protection from Chlamydia is to abstain from sexual intercourse completely, or only engage in sexual activity with one monogamous partner who has been tested and confirmed negative for the disease. Latex condoms can also reduce the risk of transmission. Any genital symptoms such as soreness, itching, burning, or bleeding, should be immediately evaluated by a qualified medical professional.
