Choosing the Right Massage Lotion

A massage is a wonderful way to relax, relieve tension, and get some relief from sore aches and pains. An important part of a massage session is the use of lotions, cream, and oils. These types of products are an important element of an enjoyable massage. There are many types of products that are designed for individual taste and situation. To understand which one is best for you, it is important to understand how they work.

Skin Type

Skin type can affect what kind of product that is used. Common skin types include normal, dry, sensitive, and oily. Natural and organic skincare products are made to work well on the skin. They are especially useful for people with sensitive skin. Mineral oil has a drying affect so people with dry skin should avoid products containing mineral oil.

Massage Oils

If you use massage oil, it is important to consider your own needs. Many oils stain so you may opt for a non-staining product. You should consider the consistency of the oil. There are a variety of oil textures and scents. If you have skin conditions such as acne, Jojoba oil, almond oil, and grapeseed oil are good choices because they are light. They are also good for people with acne. There are special products for feet conditions. Tea tree oil is good for fungus. Sesame oil is often used in Ayurvedic massages so they are usually thick and heavy. Olive oil is also thick and has a strong smell. Avocado oil is a great moisturizer.

If you are sensitive to scents, you should use a non-scented product. If you enjoy aromas, there are a number of oils containing pleasant scents. Oils are available as a single scent or blended together. Olive oil's scent is too strong to mix with essential oils.

A few of the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) 'Top 10 Essential Oils' include:

Ylang ylang: relieves muscle tension and acts as an antidepressant.
Geranium: relaxing and uplifting.
Lemon: uplifting.
Clary sage: helps with insomnia.
Peppermint essential oil: boosts the immune system
Roman chamomile: helps ease anxiety.
Eucalyptus: relieves muscle tension and alleviates respiratory problems.

Best Massage Oils for Dry Skin:

Evening Primrose Oil: This is not used by itself, but added to other oils. It is good for all skin types. Evening Primrose helps to rejuvenate skin cells, so it is good for dry skin.
Fractionated Coconut Oil: This is non-greasy oil that is good for dry and cracked skin.
Avocado Oil: Contain nutrients and is good for repairing damaged skin.
Sweet Almond Oil: Contains vitamin D and absorbs quickly to rehydrate skin.
Apricot Kernel Oil: Contains Vitamin E, absorbs quickly and rehydrates skin.

Massage Creams

Massage creams are generally used on people with sore muscles, an injury, or have muscle spasms. Creams contain ingredients that stimulate healing in a particular area. Therapeutic herbal muscle cream stimulates healing and is great for a deep muscle massage. Herbal muscle creams contain essential oils and Capsicum which is a heat generating ingredient. Some massage creams can affect a person with sensitive skin. Tell your massage therapist if you have sensitive skin so they do not use a cream that will cause a skin reaction. Using a paraben fee cream is a good choice. Many people prefer lotions and creams because they do not make the body feel greasy.

Massage Lotions

Massage lotions are often used for deep tissue massage. They tend to be absorbed more easily and are less slippery than creams. It is easy to massage deep into area and is wonderful for sore muscles and injuries.

Whether you have a stressful day at work, or a rough sports game, a massage is a great way to relieve tension. Choosing the right lotion will only enhance the experience.
