Results from the second phase of the STORM study on ‘Reductil Trial in Weight Reduction and Maintenance’ suggest that Reductil slimming pills are effective in helping most people maintain the initial six month weight loss for up to two years. Clinical trials were conducted using a randomized, double-blind trial to determine the usefulness of Sibutramine (Reductil) in maintaining substantial weight loss over a period of two years.

Eight European centers recruited 605 obese patients with a BMI of 30-45 kg/[m.sup.2]. Patients received 10 mg/d of Reductil for six months and followed an individualized 600 calorie-per-day deficit program based on their resting metabolic rates. Then, 467(77%) of patients with more than a 5 percent weight loss were randomly assigned to received 10mg daily of Reductil (n=352) or placebo (n=115) for further 18 months. The dose of Reductil was increased by up to 15mg daily when weight regain occurred.

The primary outcome of the study was that a number of patients at year two had maintained at least 80% of their weight loss between baseline and month six. Secondary outcomes of the study were also seen. There were changes in uric acid concentrations and glycemic and lipid variables.

This helped the investigators deduce that the patients on Reductil maintained 80% or more of their original weight loss as compared with 16% of the patients in the placebo (sugar pill) group. Moreover, patients saw a substantial decrease in their triglyceride, cholesterol, insulin and uric acid levels among others. This was found to sustain in the Reductil group but not in the placebo (sugar pill) group.
