FDA Issues Chantix Public Heatlh Advisory

On February 1st, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health advisory, giving new information about the risks of taking the prescription medicine Chantix, or Varencline Tartrate.

It stated that the drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, had reviewed and updated the prescription information for the drug, adding warnings alerting people to risks of intense mood and behavior changes. Further, it reiterated the necessity of communication between patients and their doctors regarding previous psychiatric illness, stating again that Varencline could not only be responsible for new conditions, but also exacerbate existing conditions or rekindle previous conditions. Additionally, it issued several warnings:

* Patients should tell their doctor about any history of psychiatric illness prior to starting Chantix. Chantix may cause worsening of a current psychiatric illness even if it is currently under control and may cause an old psychiatric illness to reoccur.

* Healthcare professionals, patients, patients' families, and caregivers should be alert to and monitor for changes in mood and behavior in patients treated with Chantix. Symptoms may include anxiety, nervousness, tension, depressed mood, unusual behaviors and thinking about or attempting suicide. In most cases, neuropsychiatric symptoms developed during Chantix treatment, but in others, symptoms developed following withdrawal of Chantix therapy.

* Patients taking Chantix should immediately report changes in mood and behavior to their doctor.

* Patients taking Chantix may experience vivid, unusual, or strange dreams.

* Patients taking Chantix may experience impairment of the ability to drive or operate heavy machinery.
While Chantix has demonstrated clear evidence of efficacy, it is important to consider these safety concerns and alert patients that they are possible.

These are not the first Chantix warnings announced by the FDA. In November 2007, the FDA began investigating reports of depression, agitation and suicidal behavior among patients taking the medicine, after they had received reports of 37 suicides and more than 400 of suicidal behaviors in connection with the drug. A link between Chantix and serious psychiatric complications became progressively probable. Additionally, the FDA determined that there might be other adverse side effects of Chantix such as the further worsening of preexisting psychiatric illness or causing a recurrence of past psychiatric issues. Two weeks after this initial FDA report, Pfizer added stronger Chantix warning labels to the drug, stating publicly that while a direct link between Chantix and the reported psychiatric problems did not exist, the possibility of Chantix-induced psychotic episodes could not be ruled out.

Most recently, the FDA has been evaluating reports that in addition to erratic behavior in patients taking Chantix, suicidal thoughts, depression, and changes in the emotional state are present in many cases. These Chantix psychiatric adverse events can set in within days or weeks of beginning the Chantix treatment. In fact, many patients taking the medicine have posted their feelings online, seeking support after a highly-publicized shooting that was linked by the media to the drug. Most of these people describe intense nightmares, paralyzing depression, consuming apathy, anxiety, or thoughts of suicide. Many of these cases were linked to alcohol consumption and the interaction that it has with the drug. While there is not a definitive Chantix-suicide connection in a controlled testing, there is ever-mounting evidence raising concern.

While there is not as of yet a current Chantix class-action lawsuit against the manufacturer, Pfizer, the public outcry for reform, reparation and compensation for the damages done grows larger every day. No doubt that with the release of the FDA's most recent review of the drug and it's potentially fatal side effects that there will soon be litigation against the company. To be sure, even Pfizer admits to a certain risk of taking the drug, although none so serious as the actuality of many of the cases. It would be wise for anyone who has firsthand experience with suicidal thoughts or severe depression from taking Chantix, or who has been affected by someone who is or was taking Chantix, to contact a health care provider as soon as possible.

Once the health of anyone taking Chantix has been assured, it may be in the best interest of any Chantix patient or their families to consider contacting an expert Chantix law firm in order to receive experienced counsel on possible Chantix damages that may be sought for those effected by the possible danger of Chantix suicide.

Oral Supplementation for Hemorrhoids

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
Oral dietary supplementation is an attractive addition to the traditional treatment of hemorrhoids. The loss of vascular integrity is associated with the pathogenesis of hemorrhoids. Several botanical extracts have been shown to improve microcirculation, capillary flow, and vascular tone, and to strengthen the connective tissue of the perivascular amorphous substrate. Oral supplementation with AntihemorrhoidsDrops may prevent time-consuming, painful, and expensive complications of hemorrhoids.

Herpes Encephalitis

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
Herpes encephalitis is the most common cause of sporadic viral encephalitis. Herpes encephalitis can occur either through hematogenous spread or neuronal transmission. Recent scientific studies of medicinal antiviral plant extracts show very encouraging results for a herpes cure, and have sparked a new methodology for treating herpes. Studies of these antiviral extracts demonstrate that many of these compounds exhibit significant anti-herpetic activity.

Interferon for Warts

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
It appears that combinations of interferon and other treatments are not more effective than such other treatments used alone. The high cost of interferon make it a treatment best reserved for genital warts recalcitrant to other treatments. Interferon may not have a synergistic effect with other treatment modalities in the treatment of condyloma. Determining the best treatment for genital warts takes into account efficacy, needs, preferences, financial resources and convenience to the patient.

Acquisition of HSV during Pregnancy

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
Neonatal herpes is an uncommon but serious complication of genital herpes. The acquisition of genital herpes during pregnancy has been associated with spontaneous abortion, prematurity, and congenital and neonatal herpes. A cure is needed immediately once an outbreak appears. Pills often take time to take effect and are not a cure for herpes virus infections when full blown. The molecules are naturally occurring in certain plant extracts and heavily concentrated in our anti-herpes treatments.

Trichloracetic Acid for Genital Wart

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
Trichloracetic acid (TCA) can be used to treat genital warts. It is most effective when treating few small, moist lesions. TCA also can be used to treat vaginal and anal lesions. In addition to effectiveness, mechanisms and dosing schedules inform a physician's decision on what therapy to select. What's more, it is important to understand the side effects of treatments of genital warts because side effects influence the choices that physician and patient make regarding choice of treatment.

HSV and Cognitive Deficits

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
Serologic evidence of HSV 1 infection is associated with cognitive impairment in individuals with bipolar disorder. HSV infection also causes several distinct medical disorders. Patients with immature or suppressed immune systems are prone to severe complications from HSV infections. Certain dietary adjustments, dietary supplements, and alternative remedies are believed to be beneficial in the treatment of herpes, either alone, or in conjunction with prescribed antiviral therapy.

Carbon Dioxide Laser Therapy for Warts

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
CO2 laser therapy is a useful treatment modality, especially for extensive warts. Carbon dioxide laser can be used to treat extensive and thick warts quickly and without the drawing of blood. However, laser treatment is more complex and costly than electrosurgery or cryotherapy. A disadvantage of the lasers is that the risk of scarring, although small, is greater than of cryotherapy. Warts occurring on the body, face, feet, hands or genitals can be successfully eliminated with AntiWarts-Rx.

Relationship between Herpes and Neuronal Disorders

By: bcured | 28/11/2009
The potential effect of HSV-1 in the etiology of Bell's palsy has prompted the use of antiviral medication to treat the condition. The benefits of acyclovir and valacyclovir have been studied. But the effect appears small, if at all detectable. Vaccines are in clinical trials but have not demonstrated effectiveness. Treatments can reduce viral reproduction and shedding, prevent the virus from entering the skin, and alleviate the severity of symptomatic episodes.

Hedging Strategies Can Reduce Investment Losses

By: Alan Haburchak | 22/05/2008 | Law
While hedging is considered to be "risky business" among many stockbrokers, if a broker does not offer a hedging strategy to a client and the client then loses money, that stockbroker is held accountable. Often hedging is not offered to clients because a stockbroker will claim that the client is not sophisticated enough to fully comprehend the strategy and risk.
