Genital warts are a usually indicative if an infection by the Human Papilloma Virus. The warts are contagious and they can be spread by touching the infected area itself. If you touch the infected area, then the infection also spread to your hand. This is one of the reasons to not try to remove them yourself. There may be a lot of temptation to pull out the warts due to its irritating nature.
There is no cure for the HPV virus, but the genital warts can be treated and you can be rid of it. If you try the treatment by yourself at home then you may not apply the right chemicals or the technique of application may be wrong. If the wrong chemical is used, then skin in the genital area will become sore and you will end up hurt. The main source of confusion is between common warts and genital warts. As genital warts develop in a sensitive skin area you cannot apply the regular creams that you use to remove common warts.
The warts are generally removed by complicated techniques that have to be done by the specialists. These treatments involve the application of acid and other chemicals on the warts. If these are done at home, then you may end up burning your skin. The doctors can also use liquid nitrogen to freeze the warts off your skin. This has to be done over a period of time and doing this at home is in no way possible. Once none of these treatments completely clear the warts, you may need surgery to remove the warts. The types of surgery are burning the wart out or cutting it out or removal by laser. Considering how complicated the removal of warts can get, it is certainly not a good idea to try removing the warts at home.
You can always go to the doctor to buy the appropriate cream which can remove genital warts. If you use these creams, you do not have to make regular visits apart from the first visit that you made. You have to understand the technique to apply the cream before you start doing so on your own. If you are pregnant, then you should apply these creams as the side-effects may manifest in the child in the form of birth defects.
You can use a number of preventive measures to stop the virus from spreading. As the warts are external they can be contracted very easily. Thus one of the first steps you can take is using a condom or diaphragm during sex and covering the warts all the other times. You can keep your genital are clean by applying warm water on your skin or sitting in warm water in your bath tub and then drying it using a dryer.
You should always visit a doctor and you should remove all the inhibiting factors like embarrassment, frustration and fear of the consequences of infection. Once you remove the warts completely from your body, even though they can come back, chances are high that they will not reappear again.
