Opening a Medical Office in NY area

Looking to open a medical office in New York area. Trying to figure out the right location, trying to find the right space. We are here to provide advice and help on the topic.

It is not easy to narrow down the right area where you would like to have your office. Some might think, I live in the area, would be very convenient to have my office here also. Yes, it would be convenient, but would it be the right move?

As always we don't recomend handling practice start up on your own, from our experience, physicians are not trained for it. Some practice start up consultants have the experience, statistics, in some cases a feeling, given some facts on what your plans are and would be the right professionals to have on your team when starting a new medical office.

In reality, everyone is looking to save money and cut corners, it is the new trend, given today's market.

We think that finding the right location is one of the most important steps in building a successful practice. After reading some of the articles online, you might feel like you can take on this project on your own. You might say, what is the big deal, I will just contact a real estate agent and let them find the space for me, and I am done. Yes, a real estate agent can find space for you, but are they interested in what happens next, are they looking forward to your practice being a success, or do they just want to make commission on the sale as fast as possible. Are you willing to take that chance? Are they going to negotiate the best deal for you, will they give you advice on your initial office layout?

Yes, some practice start up consultants take pride in their work and they do want to build a successful practice.

Now, lets get back to the space issue. Given today's real estate market, this is an ideal time to rent out space, rental prices are at the bottom and you can save a great deal of money. In cases where you want to sign a longer lease, you will be able to negotiate an even greater deal. Signing a longer lease in today's market is not a bad idea, given the tendency of real estate prices to go up in the near future. Another important decision you must make is the lease terms.

You are not just looking for affordable space, or a great deal, you are looking for suitable space for your medical practice. You need to figure out your minimal and ideal size requirements. Also, you have to make sure that your office would be accessible by all patients(patients with disabilities).

Another factor to consider is what type of space are you looking for, whether you are looking for free standing office or an office in a medical building. What suites your plan better, in cases where you are looking for some walk in patients you might do better in you own space, that is visible to the public.

Don't forget you must look ahead, additional space never hurts, plus you might want to share an office in the future with a partner or a specialist, or you might want to purchase additional equipment that will improve your bottom line. Always think ahead!

You have to consider carefully how much space you need, things like an additional examination room, can increase patient flow and improve your schedule(you will be able to see more patients that day).

A larger waiting room, might make for a better atmosphere and improve your customer service. Keeping your patients comfortable and happy should be a high priority.

Your practice manager or practice start up consultant might have ideas on improving your plans, it pays to listen.
