Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is sometimes performed by a doctor to correct functional impairments caused by burns, injuries, congenital and developmental abnormalities, infection, disease, or removal of cancers or tumors. In addition to correcting cuts and other surface wounds, plastic surgeons also regularly treat both cancerous and non-cancerous growths and problems with organs under the skin. Tumors, both cancerous and benign, can vary in type, severity and recurrence. The removal method chosen will depend largely on the type and stage of the growth and its location within the body. Skin cancers and growths are usually removed by an excision and closure, leaving a small thin scar. If the cancer is large or spreading, major surgery may be necessary. Whether the reconstructive procedure is for a tumor or used to correct other functional impairments, health insurance may or may not cover the procedure. If the patient is unsure, he or she should check with the health insurance company.

Consultation

During the consultation, the patient should ask for information that specifically details the procedure being considered. The doctor may inform the patient that the surgery's results can vary greatly; and healing ability and the outcome is never completely predictable. The size, nature and extent of the injury or deformity can determine what treatment option is chosen and how long the surgery will last. The specifics of the surgery will also be determined by the physician based on the patient's age, overall health and medical history, his or her tolerance of specific medications, procedures, therapies or location of the area being reconstructed. The patient should also ask the doctor to explain any part of the procedure that may seem unclear or risky. Finally, the patient may want to ask the doctor for references from patients who have had the procedure. Remember that reconstructive procedures frequently demand complex planning, so it is important for a patient to make sure they understand the procedure before surgery.

Consultation with an experienced and trained surgeon can give positive and effective results. It can assure the patient of the surgeon's abilities and let the patient know what to expect from the procedure. Before deciding to undergo surgery, always make sure to search for a certified surgeon who can answer all your queries and suggest you the best option.

Complications

Recovery time can be a bit longer than with cosmetic procedures and there may be more risk of complications. When it is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor; and the recovery time is usually minimal. Everyone heals at a different rate and plastic surgeons usually can not pinpoint an exact date of full recovery following surgery. They can, however, give you a general idea of when you can expect to notice improvement. Patients undergoing the surgery may be more at risk of complication. Some complications associated with reconstructive plastic surgery may include infection, bleeding, and bruising. Risk of complications may increase if a patient smokes, has skin damage from radiation therapy, decreased circulation, HIV, an impaired immune system, or poor nutritional habits. If the individual chooses a reputable doctor and follows all of the instructions, then the chances of complications severely decrease.
