Like most steroid hormones testosterone is derived from cholesterol and is generated in the cells within the ovaries of woman and the testes of men.
In the Artificial production of testosterone its able to be synthesized in almost unlimited quantities. Now, there are two possible ways that it can be made giving it different abilities.
1) It can be esterifed. This can give it a long lasting effect if injected into the body.
2) It can be alkalated. This method of production allows the supplement to be taken in the from of a pill. Although with effects lasting for a shorter duration.
The effects of testosterone are more evident in males than in females, although the hormone is very important to both sexes. Some of these effects may decline as the levels of testosterone depletes in the twilight years of life. But, replacement or supplementing testosterone can do the following:
1) It can increase a persons libido, as far as clitoral engorgement for a woman, and more frequent and larger erections in a man.
2) It can increase a persons mental and phisical energy, and of coarse as it affects the main sexual organ, the brain, the libido connection is complete.
Now a very recent and very reliable study has shown that testosterone does not cause prostate cancer, but for a man who has already experienced the onset of the disease, it can increase the rate of the spread of this potentially deadly cancer.
Recent studies have also shown the importance of testosterone in cardiovascular health. Hearts and lungs for instance in men, are found to be lager than in woman.
A study conducted in 1996 found that administering a dose of testosterone above and beyond the normal level found in the adult male had no effects an mood or behavior. This was after 10 weeks of administering the supplemented hormone.
Other studies have show an increase in attention, memory and spacial ability and other cognitive functions are helped by testosterone supplementing...but there isn't a lot of information on this yet. The opposite being true, low testosterone levels can be linked to a degeneration of cognitive function, leading to dimentia and Alzheimer disease.
So testosterone is still being touted as the anti-aging drug. These studies showing the positive effects of steroids on the brain are beginning to counterbalance the unproven claims everyone has heard concerning "roid rage", It has been shown that hypogonadism, a lack of testosterone or abnormally low levels of this hormone can actually be the culprit in mood disorders and aggressive behavior.
Now thanks to the anabolic steroid control act causing steroids to be considered a controlled substance by the US government.back in 1990 . Use of steroids is considered doping in most sports in our country... whether its applied in gels or patches, or injected into the muscle.
As the phrase coined by 15th century medicine man Paracelsus so aptly states; "The only difference between poison and medicine is the dose" the dose of steroids typically taken by an athlete is much greater than the dose given to combat hypogonadism in a victim of castration. In that case, only a dose sufficient to bring testosterone levels back up, and maintain them where they would remain if the testicles were there to produce it naturally is administered.
