Businesses must conduct risk assessments to identify accurate first aid requirements before purchasing their first aid provision, but how much consideration actually goes into consumer purchases?

Although the provision of first aid has long been an essential legal provision within the work place, only in recent years have consumers started to realise the benefits of having their own first aid items and first aid kits. But are consumers getting the product mix correct for their potential first aid needs?

There is no mandatory list of contents for first aid kits although the Health and Safety Executive do offer guidelines to businesses regarding standard items that should be included within their first aid provision. The HSE also strongly promotes the need for accurate risk assessments when considering appropriate first aid provision for the workplace. This isn't just sound advice for employers and businesses but also for the consumer market.

Consumer first aid kit purchases should also be based upon a realistic risk assessment. Points for consideration should be, for example; where will the kit be kept and used? What potential injuries could occur in that environment? How many people require cover? Does this include children? Of course, all of this is common sense, but with the majority first aid kits being impulse buys these key points are not necessarily considered at the time of purchase. Following on from these priority points, other more user specific aspects could be considered such as items that may cause allergic reactions; a person with a latex allergy would not be able to use gloves of plasters that contain latex.

In reality, not such an impulse purchase after all? It is perhaps more advisable to research your requirements and shop for first aid products online. There are specialised online retailers of first aid kits and accessories who have vast and varied ranges of products to suit both the needs of business and consumer customers. Researching and buying online allows for a more informed decision to be made and is more often than not more cost effective than buying on the high street.

The First Aid Warehouse specializes in the supply of first aid equipment and diagnostic products to both the public and trade. They offer an extensive range of products including washproof, fabric and blue detectable plasters.

With a wealth of industry knowledge, their online e-commerce platform provides a safe and secure environment to purchase from. They accept all major credit and debit cards and welcome orders from members of the public and health organisations including Primary Care Trusts, Care Homes, Surgeries, schools etc. If you wish to set up a business account, you can contact them either via sales@firstaidwarehouse.co.uk or on 0845 6121217
