Using CPAP Machines Without a Prescription

It might seem surprising to some that it's virtually impossible to get CPAP machines without a prescription as a motorized oxygen mask doesn't qualify to most as being on the same plane as actual medication, but it really is. If you're searching for a way to find and use any model of CPAP machines without a prescription there are some things you should consider first before going ahead with such a plan.

The first thing to think about is that it's true that you can purchase just about anything and everything online these days, and that includes items that by law shouldn't be sold or that legally require certain paperwork for you to purchase, such as prescription medications. Legally you must have a prescription from a doctor in order to purchase a CPAP machine but of course if you type " CPAP machines without a prescription" into your internet search engine you're going to get a wealth of options.

Any site that sells you a machine without a prescription is doing so illegally, and of course if you purchase such a machine without a prescription you are also doing something illegal.

The next thing that many people wonder about is why you can't get CPAP machines without a prescription. They're just oxygen, right? The reason for this is your own protection. CPAP machines are not usually dangerous but keep in mind that their function is to push air into your lungs on a continuous basis. Machines have certain pressure settings that need to be adjusted to your own particular needs, just as medications are taken in certain doses that are adjusted to each person individually.

Using CPAP machines without a prescription or further instruction from your doctor is like buying any prescription medication and just taking it blindly without any thought as to how much you need, how much is too much and therefore dangerous, and so on. The wrong pressure on your machine means you could damage your lungs and not enough pressure means the machine is ineffective.

So before you go ahead with your plans of shopping around for CPAP machines without a prescription, remember that a prescription is always issued for your protection. If you have any condition that warrants the use of a CPAP machine you should be under a doctor's care and supervision anyway, so make an appointment and get your condition taken care of properly!

I meant to rate your article as a five, but only saw one star so I scrolled over it and clicked, thinking this would bring up the rating system. I think this is confusing. Anyway I wanted to thank you for the article and for saving my from myself! I realize now I DO need to call my doctor to talk with her about CPAP.

Well that is all fine and good for her to say, but .... I have already been through 2 sleep studies, and numerous Dr. visits, and while my Dr. says that my obstructive sleep apnea is rated just below the cut off for being able to perscribe CPAP equipment, he wants me to have surgery to remove my tonsils, adnoids, and a part of my uvula, and then have another suregery to repair a slightly deviated septum. So gee, I can have two very expensive and painful procedures for someone in thier 50's, that will cost me and my insurance company thousands of dollars ... or I can boldly defy the laws and try to find a used CPAP machine without a RX....just call me an outlaw.

I will have to apply and qualify for medical insurance next year. If I have one more red flag on my medical record I will never qualify for insurance. With all my other medical problems, a CPAP would disqualify me for insurance. I need a CPAP very badly, but I absolutely HAVE to keep my medical records as clean as possible. (Don't tell me to check with a health insurance agent, I AM a health insurance agent.) I believe getting an illegal CPAP is better than dying of sleep apnea. If any one knows how I can get one please email me at dnmilton@gmail.com.

My doctor seems to think I would do better to have my tonsils and adenoids removed. However, I am reading horror stories of adults having that operation and still not able to eat solid foods, return to work or stop taking narcotic painkillers after more than a month from surgery. So, at this rate, I'd rather have a CPAP than an operation. I simply cannot take that much time off of work. However, if my doctor won't prescribe one for me, what am I to do?

I went to the doctor, did all the test, did the sleep clinic, got a prescription and have used my machine for 6 or 7 years. I know the rate I have been using (8) now I can't get a newer maching until I go back to a doctor again? Does that seem right to anyone?

Hmmmmm, let's see, I'm a well-educated, cautious individual and I have the choice of either:
(1) renting or buying an auto-CPAP machine to see if it helps me sleep better
...or...
(2) going though god knows how many doctor appointments, culminating in an EXPENSIVE (like THOUSANDS of dollars--I don't have fancy insurance) and possibly useless sleep study (what's to guarantee you even fall asleep during the study!!??)
This "papa (government) knows best" stuff REALLY bothers me. I suppose it's in place because people can be really stupid (we've all been there). But when you look at SKYROCKETING health insurance costs, give me a break. In this instance, especially with auto-CPAP being available, this prescription-only crap does MORE HARM THAN GOOD (especially for someone like me who's patient and prepared to get well-informed about the use of any such device before using it).
I know it would be everything but responsible for the article's author to advocate anything less than "by-the-rules" but I just HAD to vent here...

Hi there. I'm reasonably new to APAP (3 months), and just need to comment as someone writing an aricle like this should be more educated. The machine does NOT provide OXYGEN as stated in the article. It provides the normal air we breathe at pressure to splint the airway. If you use APAP instead of CPAP some places will sell it to you legally without a prescription - you can even use it for snoring!

This completely glosses over the concept of self adjusting CPAP machines. Also, CPAP machines are designed to release excess pressure and also to allow you to breath should say, the power goes off, hose kinks, cat knocks machine off your nightstand, etc...

A Dr. Rx is ridiculous as a Dr. never evaluates the information. The outrageous cost for analysis is absurd as there is nothing done other than a person spending the night in a bed with a cpap machine/monitor. This could be a bundled set up that could be sent home and made reasonable. SO I have to agree with other people. The Rx is just a device to grab money from people!

It's just a money grab by the doctors. I wouldn't have a problem with a prescription for your first machine but anyone who's been diagnosed should not need to pay a doctor to get a second or replacement machine.
