What Is BMI?

My BMI is this but it should be that. Your BMI is that but apparently it should be this. Help! In layman's terms, what actually is all this BMI malarkey that I keep hearing so much about?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and BMI is simply a quantitative measurement standard used by doctors, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists and other health-care professionals around the world to determine whether a person is overweight or clinically obese.

Very basically, it is a statistical tool used by bio-medicine - which is "the application of the principles of the natural sciences, especially biology and physiology, to clinical medicine" (The American Heritage® Medical Dictionary, 2007) - to estimate a healthy body weight based on how tall a person is.

BMI is a reasonably reliable, short hand diagnostic indicator of body fatness and it can be used by doctors and the like to screen for weight categories that might have a greater risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and breast and colon cancer among others things; it is an early warning system.

To work out your BMI, divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared, or you can divide your weight in pounds by the square of your height in inches, then multiply by 703. The normal acceptable range of this measurement is 20.1 to 25.0 for men and 18.7 to 23.8 for women.

A reputable online BMI calculator is available here. http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx?Tag

There are, however, a few exceptions to the BMI rule of thumb. For example, professional athletes and body builders may have a BMI over the normal range despite being exceedingly physically fit, it should be duly noted.

In a nutshell, BMI is measurement system commonly used by medical professionals around the globe to determine body fat percentages in the general population; its stated purpose is to help individuals stay fit and healthy where at all possible.
