Catnip, or Nepeta Cataria is a perennial herb of the mint family. Catnip could also be referred to as catwort or catmint. Aspiring to a meter tall, the multi-branched stem has small, purple-spotted white flowers on them. These delicate leaves contain catnip oil, which is the primary ingredient and is emitted when the leaves are split or smashed.
Catnip can make cats become quite playful and energetic even a small percentage of cats will actually become rather aggressiv. Catnip will make cats become more hyperactive or super-loving, as if sexually aroused. They will lick, sniff, roll all in it to get it all over their scent pads, and eat it. After a few minutes of delirium, they'll saunter off to something else, "immune" to the effect for an hour or two.You can dose your cats any of a number of different ways. You can also get sprays for your cat scratching post, to encourage them to claw it instead of your nice furniture.
However, some cats like kittens and sometimes senior cats are not affected, and somewhere around a 1/4 to 1/3 of cats are not genetically predisposed to react at all.
The effects of cats on catnip can often be viewed as hilarious by their owners. Cats will often roll around the floor or similar surface, in a fit of heightened frenzy. Pawing the area that has been in contact with the catnip. Sometimes making peculiar noises. The effects will wear off after a while and the cat will appear to become bored but after half an hour of so, you can sprinkle more cat magic on the floor and watch all over again for another insane kitty cat sideshow.
Catnip is like a homing beacon to cats. For any of you out there who are having serious trouble with your pet cat scratching your house to pieces. Simply put some of the catnip in a rugged cloth pillow of even better, put some catnip on a scratching post and watch mr frisky transfer his angst onto something less expensive than your brand new three piece couch.
In time a new associated habit will form and you cat, with a little help from certain catnip administrations, will hopefully go for the post more than he or she goes for your leg of armchair.
