A very small percentage of the American population is trained medical personnel. Most of us have an aunt's cousin's husband who is a doctor or know a friend from college that went on to be a nurse but very few of us are familiar with what is going on in the world of medicine. Even for those of us not interested in science, it is amazing to hear about the technological and research breakthroughs that are made every day! Medicine has come such a long since the turn of the century. People are living healthier, longer lives thanks to what we now know about how disease is spread and how the human body works.
You do need to exercise some caution with regards to medicine, however. You cannot put all your faith in physicians and medical equipment. These individuals did survive the rigors of medical school and their residencies, but they are still human so they are capable of mistakes. Medical machines are also not perfect. If they have been regularly examined by medical machine technicians and all repairs have been made, then they are generally very accurate. However, the machines do not give you the diagnosis, the physicians do.
Due to the rapid increase in specialized medical machines, a new medical field developed to prevent misdiagnoses. Radiologists, who primarily use medical imaging equipment, are the experts that know how to operate certain machines and interpret their data. These machines are incredibly helpful when it comes to diagnosing and treating disease, but if they are not used properly, they can do more damage then good. Therefore, this technology is a wonderful asset, but we always need to be wary. Remember, that doctors make mistakes as well and if you doubt their diagnoses, always try to get a second opinion.
Medical equipment helps save lives every day and medical machines are a large part of why medicine has become a much more accurate science. If you are interested in learning more about radiology or the latest medical breakthroughs, just do some searching on the web or attend a medical equipment show. It is a fascinating field and you might be inspired to make this discipline your new career!
