Propecia is the most prescribed hair restoration supplement by hair transplant surgeons. It is the only hair loss treatment FDA approved to be safe to use for male pattern baldness. Although considered a safe product, some patients have experienced a few side effects. This raises concern in many patients whom are considering taking Propecia for the first time. Here are a few typical questions with their corresponding answers.
- I’m not really sexually active. How would I know if my sex drive was affected by Propecia?
Some patients have reported to continue using Propecia regardless of its adverse effect on their sex drive. In addition, most of these same patients have reported a progressive increase in their libido with continued use. Even so, you have the option to discontinue the use of Propecia if you do experience sexual side effects but considering the above statement may not need to do so unless the effects continue. A placebo study on Propecia has shown that increase in functionality occurred at the same rate as with those on the placebo pill.
- I’m planning to raise a family. Will I still be able to impregnate my partner?
Although Propecia may decrease your desire to have sex, it has no adverse affect on your sperm count or fertility.
- Even after a hair transplant surgery, do I still have to continue using Propecia?
Yes. The fact that you had a transplant does not mean that the rest of your hair which is prone to DHT will not fall out. This means that the hair normally lost due to male pattern baldness will continue to recede while the newly transplanted hair stays intact. At least compared to Rogaine, Propecia does not make a patient experience what is known as catch up hair loss which is the loss of hair follicles regained through the medical treatment.
