Anger, when out of control, can not only destroy you from the inside but can destroy your personal and professional relationships as well. One of the main ways to control anger is to recognise the root of the problem and try and sort that out as there are going to be a number of inciting events for the rest of your life, but if you can control yourself then you can control your anger too.
This article attempts to help your understand anger and find some constructive solutions for it.
What is Anger?
To deal with anger it is important that you understand what anger is all about. Anger is an emotional state that can vary from mild irritation to intense fury and rage and is usually accompanied by both biological and physiological changes. When you get angry your heart beat increases and your blood pressure rises as well. Also your energy hormones shoot up as do the levels of your adrenaline and noradrenaline.
Anger can be caused by both internal as well as external reasons and events. You could be angry at a co-worker or the traffic or you could be angry because of a personal problem that is playing on your mind. Memories of traumatic events and tragedies can also be a reason to trigger off angry feelings.
Anger Management:
Anger can be expressed in many forms, from verbal, physical and emotional ways as well. Everyone has their own way of expressing emotions and anger and is a good way to vent it out, but anger gets out of control when it starts hurting yourself or others like in the case of physically abusing someone in order to show anger. The goal of anger management techniques is to help you reduce both your physiological and emotional arousal that anger causes. As mentioned above, you can control how people or events that enrage you happen around you, but you can control your reactions.
Recognise the Problem:
Are you too angry?
One of the first steps to recovering from your anger is to recognise the fact that you have a bad temper only then will you want to change. There are many psychological tests that measure the intensity of angry feelings that you have. They also measure how prone to anger you are and how well you handle it. Chances are that you are already aware of the fact that you have a problem with anger, but if you find yourself behaving in unnatural ways and uncontrollable ways then it is advisable that you get help.
