Bipolar disorder is a disease of the mind. This is a psychological disorder that needs immediate attention from a psychologist. There is no cure for this disorder; however once you understand the symptoms you will be able to take the patient to an expert who may be able to stop the advancement of the disease.
People suffering from bipolar disorder are not in complete control of their emotions and moods. Now, this does not mean that they are constantly moody and depressed. No, there are very long periods when patients of bipolar disease live normal lives just like other people around them. It is when the disease takes over for a short or long person in their lives that they suffer – and we mean 'suffer'.
People suffering with bipolar disorder are not in complete control, or they may not be in control at all. This is why they tend to let their minds drift towards thoughts of injury and even suicide. Though suicide has been quite rampant in patients with bipolar disease it is not as common as self injury.
Patients with bipolar disease are prone to inflict self injury upon themselves. Sometimes this is deliberate and sometimes this happens because they are not in control and their in-coherent though process makes them fall from buildings or may drive them across a busy street where they may get injured.
People with bipolar disease are prone to harming themselves when they go through a bout of bipolar attack. This is increasingly rampant in adolescent girls and has even been noticed in adult men. What causes these people to inflict self injury on their body? Scientists are uncertain about this behavior they do say that the person's mental status, being extremely depressed is the cause of this action of self injury that may include; burning, cutting and even suicide attempts.
Bipolar disorder patients are subject to extreme mood swings, during these swings they can get very hostile and get very violent. It is important to understand the mental status of these patients and control the situation accordingly. If a bipolar patient has become hostile, people around her or him should not resort to violent tactics to try and scare the patient into submission. This may only aggravate the situation. On the other hand if a bipolar patient is scared, he or she should be consoled that no harm is going to come their way and that they should relax.
The sad part of the whole situation is that there is no known cure for bipolar disease. People should make themselves aware of the symptoms of the onset of the disease and seek medical help as soon as possible. Medicine can slow down or even arrest the spread of the disease.
