Depression – Can Be All Consuming

A lot of people, young and old alike are complaining of depression these days. Depression could be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain that trigger off this medical condition. Look out for classic symptoms of depression such as lack of motivation, feeling lonely and helpless, insomnia or even too much sleep, and suicidal thoughts among others. Stress, lack of exercise, the wrong diet, and even the genetic composition of a person are factors that influence the mental state of a person. The environment, both physical and social, is also responsible for a person’s well-being.

Nutrition is responsible not just for your physical health but also for your emotional security. What you eat can make a lot of difference to how you feel about yourself. Lack of appetite, the urge to binge or a sudden craving for a particular food item especially sweets could indicate that the person is depressed. A lot of people who are on a low-carb diet also have severe mood-swings. Of course, depression is more than just “feeling the blues”. But not having enough carbohydrates as a part of weight-loss program would have definite negative effects, one of them being depression. While sugars produce an immediate happy feeling among the depressed, complex carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, and whole grains are responsible for a less-intense ‘feel good’ factor that actually lasts longer.

Essential fatty acids and inadequate levels of certain vitamins and minerals are also known to trigger off depression. Since B-complex vitamins that are so essential for our emotional comfort can’t be stored in our body, we must ensure that they are adequately supplemented. Research has established that there are positive effects of Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, Potassium, and Manganese on our state of mind. If you think that your daily diet lacks any of the afore-mentioned minerals or vitamins, your physician or psychiatrist would recommend a therapeutic dose.

Just as some food items are important to ensure that we aren’t depressed, some are a definite no-no for the same reason. Some people could be allergic to wheat while some could be allergic to oats. You must identify such items and keep off them. It’s also essential that you cleanse your body once in a while. On such days, drink plenty of fluids. Caffeine, aerated drinks, and alcohol must be strictly avoided. You must check with your physician before starting on such a fast, especially if you’re doing it for the first time ever.

The genetic composition depends on ecological factors. Sometimes the only tangible effect of a genetic disorder is depression. You must move away from places whose air is dense with smoke or the water is severely contaminated. Seasonal Affective Disorder as the name suggests, affects some people seasonally; during late winter and the condition gets better with the onset of spring. This disorder happens when the days are shorter. If you have such a condition, you must consider moving to a place that is warm. The human immune system has a direct relationship with the environment. Smog causes an asthmatic attack in some people. Repeated attacks could worsen the emotional state of a person. Where you live would also influence your social life, a factor that affects a person’s psychological state. The influence of ecology on an infant’s social behavior is well-known.

It’s hence necessary to treat depression in a holistic manner. Change your exercise and diet routine. It’s imperative that you get the right mix of nutrition. Your surroundings must be clean and instill a sense of well-being in you. At the beginning of your combat against depression take small steps and you’ll see that the condition is curable with timely counseling. Your family and friends’ support is also of utmost importance.
