Determining The Best ADHD Treatment Options For You Unique Situation

Many parents of ADHD children and ADHD adults alike wonder, is ADHD treatable and if so whether or not ADHD treatment options actually work. Another concern often expressed is are they safe. After all there is so much information combined with misinformation that even the experts have trouble deciphering fact from fiction. In this article titled “Determining The Best Treatment Options For Your Unique Situation” we will explore some basic information to help you find the path to successfully overcoming ADHD.

ADHD is a complicated condition consisting of the primary symptoms of inattention/distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity along with such troubling secondary symptoms as low self esteem, boredom, frustration, hopelessness, worry, and sleepless nights. With so many symptoms and so many different treatment options a good first step is to determine which symptoms you are trying to overcome. You may need the help of a professional or may be able to accomplish this on your own. By making a list you will instantly gain a better understanding of the impact your symptoms are having on your life. If it is your child, husband, wife, or other loved one work with them in making a list both of symptoms and the challenges those symptoms present.

Now that we have isolated our challenges the next step on our way to finding the best ADHD treatment options is to determine what changes we want to make. Approach this step from the perspective that you can and will get better.

The above two steps are much like planning a vacation. First pick a destination then determine how you are going to get there.

We have now formulated a plan and identifies our goals. Now we will be faced with a myriad of ADHD treatment options. If you are receiving guidance from a medical profession chances are they will prescribe one of six stimulant medications. (Ritalin, Adderall, Cylert, Dexedrine, Provigil, Desoxyn). While these medications show positive results in about 3 out of every 4 instances they come with a number of side effects risks. If this is the direction you and your doctor choose stay vigilant for side effect symptoms such as personality changes, social withdrawal, fatigue, loss of spontaneity, hostility, aggression, anxiety, depression, any sign of heart or chest pain, or paranoia.

Stimulants are certainly worth considering but before you jump into a lifelong partnership with brain chemical altering stimulants you should consider doing a bit of research on alternatives which are virtually side effect free. Here are seven categories worth looking into: counseling, coaching, behavior management, vitamins and diet, herbal homeopathic remedies, repatterning therapies, and balancing therapies.

Children tend to respond in a positive way to behavioral therapy that rewards them for controlling impulses and learning how to focus. For adults coaching in skills that help them cope with problem behaviors, such as disorganization or having a lack of concentration, is often helpful. Support groups for both adults and parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity can be helpful in overcoming feelings of isolation.

Earlier we posed the question; is ADHD treatable. Certainly, the answer is yes, but only if you are able to find the right ADHD treatment options for your unique personality and situation.

Additionally, many children and adults alike have found that by combining cognitive behavioral counseling with homeopathic remedies for ADHD they have been able to achieve powerful results. Combining these two ADHD treatment options is a side effect free way to address such problematic primary ADHD symptoms as inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity and is certainly a one two punch worth considering.
